Always make sure to wear your tourist white tennis shoes. Make sure they are comfortable to allow you to do lots of walking.
Lets not forget the stuff for the itchies. Mosquitoes go away into the summer, but in the beginning they sure can put a spring in your step and BOy do they itch! OH... SUNSCREEN! A Fairbanks summer provides with over 22 hours of sunlight. Even if the skies are cloudy, there are plenty of UV rays to deliver a nasty burn if your unprotected.
No matter where you go in Alaska, your going to want to take a supply of disposable camaras or make sure you bring your own batteries for your camaras. Some places are extremely remote and finding a place to purchase new ones while your out and about is hard to do.
Some of the most wonderful outdoor experiences take place right here in Alaska. Fairbanks is no exception. One of the most important things to remember if you visit this state is that it is totally different than most places you visit in the lower 48. Our rivers are colder and wilder even in the summertime. Always wear your life jacket and never venture off alone.
The wildlife is still abundant and the terrain is something you MUST respect. Take caution and heed warnings from the resident Alaskans, we wont steer you wrong. Our wildlife is protected not only for their safety but your own. Leave a Comment

Always take along with you lots of extra clothing, coats, warm boots, and blankets. Just a precautionary step to ensure safe travel through Alaska, because the weather can be rough in some places.
First aid kits are nessary when traveling anywhere. You should have your kit stocked with anything you think you might need for every emergency.
Frost bite is a common thing when the weather reaches -40 and colder. If you find yourself stranded on the roadside, most Alaskans will stop to help when it gets cold, But for off the beaten path, try to stay warm, keep your face, feet, fingers and ears covered.
You can use just about any kind of camera to take pictures of the scenery and wildlife here. You might want to use the best film for moving objects and lighting, since you might not want to stop and get out of your vehicle to shoot a picture of bears or moose, as they tend to attack!
Be sure to take along warm clothing if camping in the cold months usually between the months of October and April. Also you might want to carry a riffle or a hand gun to scare off preditors like bears when you go camping. I would advise not to shoot them, just to scare them off. Don't travel far from your campsite alone, and keep all food and garbage away from your camp.
If you like to fish, bring along a pole, salmon pole or fly rod, there are pleanty of places along the side of the highways to fish. Don't forget to get your fishing licence for tourist before you fish! Leave a Comment

for summertime, it's either dry enough for tennis shoes or wet enough for rubber boots. not much use for hiking boots. they are either too hot or you get wet.
telephoto is a must. everything is huge and far away
sunscreen, believe it or not. it's not very high or super hot, but it keeps coming and you get scorched, especially around water. Leave a Comment

Back packs if you want to travel light.
Bring the whole set if you have strong arms. Not many hotels have help.
A fanny pack is nice for sight-seeing and touring so that you dont' have to keep track of loose purses and tote bags.
Comfortable shoes with thick rubber soles no high heels
Rain gear you never know when there will be a shower
Sweatshirt unless you plan to buy a souvenir sweatshirt after you get here

Yes, bring your swim suit. The area has three pools as well as pools in some of the hotels. Chena Lakes Recreation Area has outside swimming.
Bring sports equipment.

Volleyball and softball are popular in the Fairbanks area. Alaskaland has a volleyball sandpit.

Sun hat or baseball caps. Fairbanks has the sunniest weather in the state.

Summer - a light jacket is helpful...
Winter - long underwear, lined Carhartt jeans, gloves, warm wool hat, warm boots and wool socks. Also, if you're going to snowshoe, something to protect your face in the subzero temps.
Summer - bug juice ... the skeeters are big, numerous, and hungry.

As with any type of travel, luggage should be easily carried and tough enough to survive the trip.
Luggage in Alaska, wether you are travelling alone or with a large tour group, will get dirty, muddy and/or wet. A Louis Vitton matched set will more than likely not be what you want to take to Alaska.
If you don't like the weather, stick around for a while, it will change. This is very true of Alaska in the non-Winter months.
The secret to any travel packing is to dress in layers. Fairbanks in the summer can get up to +90F, but that is rare. Mid 80F temperatures are a nice warm day in Fairbanks. With it's near-24 hour a day sunshine, even at 22:00, the temperatures can remain in the 70F's. Once the sun goes down, though, the temperatures drop with it.
The Alaskan Mosquito has reached legendary, almost Paul Bunyan-like notariety. Most of the stories, such as 'one stole my poodle off it's leash!' are unfounded.
Stories of swarms of mosquitoes being visible as grey clouds, however, are somewhat true. In Fairbanks, aggressive mosquito control efforts over the last few years have reduced their numbers of a tolerable level for the most part. In areas away from downtown though, their numbers increase.
To combat these creatures, a good insect repellent (Off! Deep Woods or Cutters) work well. If you are going to be outside hiking or camping, a military headnet is a good investment. Looking like a light-weight bee keeper's hood, these items are indispensable. Leave a Comment

In August I wore a light blazer and thick undershirts, the air was a bit chilly and the evening and nights were brrrrrr. Good walking shoe such as tennis shoe...DON'T forget to bring an unbrella, you never know when the next rain will fall.
Your in America USA here, so not to worry about these little things that we take litely.
I live in a tourist town, so things are going to be prices, as any tourist town. But, I myself I buy at a local store (Mal-Mart), buy all you films and what nots there before you travel off, then your not running around looking for a film shop and wasting valuable time off from you vacation.
I work around water all the time, and I not an outdoors kind of person. But if you are going to camp, beach, out alway bring the proper gear: Here in Alaska I would say a wetsuit for swimming, and for camping in a tent on the ground in these part you would need a 1" high dences foam (Evergreen), And lots of hot COFFEE.
As long as you do your homework and bring all that you think you need and not so much of other uncalled for necessity you'll be fine. Leave a Comment
