 | Fairbanks Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 42 | | The menu often revolves around the seasons, it seems, and is always a treat to sample the new dishes from Pistaccio Rack of Lamb, to Calamari Steaks, to the Pumpkin Creme Brulee! There are a wonderful assortment of wines to sample and those are often updated to introduce in the latest award winners! It is very affordable as the meals are served as somewhat large appetizers, but smaller than entrees; they are the perfect portion!

On the ground floor of the Springhill Suites Marriot Hotel, you will chance upon a wonderful restaurant that is within view of the Chena River. The salmon and halibut dishes are incredible, as well as the scrumptuous selection of various choice beef cuts. "Wine on Wednesdays" offers tastings of some of the hottest wines out there, and be sure to save room for dessert!

Around 1900, gold was discovered in the Ester area, and a boom began. By 1907, Ester City had three hotels, five saloons and four or five businesses. In the 1930's, a large scale mechanized mining operation began. The Fairbanks Exploration Company brought in many of the structures which are now a part of Ester Gold Camp. The operation continued through the 1950's. In 1958, the Camp was sold and a visitor attraction was created. The Mess Hall became the BunkHouse Restaurant, the Miner's Quarters became the Bunkhouse Hotel, the Blacksmith Shop became the Pick-N-Poke Gift Shop and the Garage became "The World Famous Malmute Saloon." A visit here is both fun and educational, to say nothing of "delicious."
The buffet features Halibut Olympia, southern fried chicken, reindeer stew, buttermilk biscuits, homemade blueberry jam, garden fresh salads, butered potatoes, rice pilaf, corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, hot vegetables and apple crisp. It's all you can eat for: Adult - $18.95 or Child - $8.95. Dungeness Crab, ice cream desert and fountain sodas are extra. The Pumphouse is on the banks of the Chena river just downstream from Pikes. The food is good but the atmosphere is awesome. The deck is great in the summertime. If you have a canoe you can pull it out of the water on their lawn. It can get a little crowded in the summertime. The Pumphouse is an older restaurant and is a historical marker in Fairbanks. Take Geist past the university, under the Parks highway, then turn left onto Chena Pump road. Its a few miles down the road on the left.

Are you looking for fresh and tastey sushi? Try Osaka in downtown Fairbanks. They do not require a reservation and are very affordable! They offer combination plates as well as large dinners, too!
I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed the seaweed salad. I crave it now and then... The food here is ok but nothing to rave about. However Pikes Landing has a great deck and fine summer atmosphere. As you would expect they have a landing, so you can take a boat or canoe to get there. Its right across the river and a little upstream from the Pumphouse. Also right next to Pikes lodge. I go here for lunch in the summertime. There is also a bar and pool tables. Soapy Smith's Pioneer Restaurant is an old downtown establishment which has the kind of atmosphere that takes you back to the days of the gold rush era. They feature real home cooking - from scratch. The walls are filled with a pictorial history and memorabilia of early Alaska, which is very interesting to browse through.
I ordered the "Homestyle Special of the Day" which was a hot open-faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. It was good. I would have enjoyed a more generous portion, but then it was only $7.50. Next time I'll try the wonderful looking half pound cheezeburger which I saw on the table beside mine.
