St Nicholas Orthodox Church, Juneau

This picture was taken by my father in 1973. The Russian influence is still visible throughout this part of Alaska.

"Although there were no Russians in Juneau at that time and Alaska had been under United States control since 1867, the Russian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas was established there in 1894. Many tourists who visit our church during the summer months are surprised to learn that it was the native Tlingit people who were the catalyst for the establishment of our church."

The Russian influence in Alaska is heavy. Even after Seward's Folly (the sale of Alaska to the United States), an influx of Russians continued. This tiny church is a good way to get a view of what the Russian Orthodox style is all about if you have never seen it before.

This Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1894. It's the oldest original Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska. The building was small but still fully functional. It has several orthodox architectural signatures, like the octagon shape, the onion roof, and the orthodox cross on top.

The St Nicholas Church is a charming structure. Built in 1894, is the oldest original Russian Orthodox Church in southeastern Alaska. It is open daily for summer tours and visitors are welcome to Sunday services.
