Kalsin Island Things to Do

  • Overlooks of the area

From the top of Kalsin Hill you can see the Marin Mountain range and the whole Kalsin Beach. Somedays it is so foggy that you can't see 5 feet in front of your face!! There are several scenic overlooks in the area. Recently the road has been improved with guardrails as there have been many accidents in the past of vehicles going off the 200-300...

  • Wet areas that can be hard for walking

If you look in the photo just behind in the beach you can see small little "ponds". These areas can be wet for walking if you don't have rubber boots on. There are some trails but even these cross through water. The area is so flat and close to the bay and the river that unless there is a severe drought they never dry up.

For the first 19 miles out of town you will have paved roads but for the rest of the way you will encounter unpaved gravel roads. • Watch for falling rock on Kalsin Hill

If you are lucky you may spot one of the many Mountain Goats that reside in the mountains above Kalsin Bay. • The Salmon run in the ditch!!

As you get close to the Olds River after passing the very long curve past The Kasin Bay Inn look to your left into the ditch. You will see Pink Salmon that have run up this very tiny slough. The flowing water eventually stops so it is amazing that the salmon return to this same spot year after year!! You can only see this in Late July through mid...

  • Turn at the "Y"

In a few of my tips here I have mentioned taking a turn at the Y. I thought I'd explain what the Y is. All of the locals call the intersection of the Chiniak Highway and the Pasagshak Highway the Y. Basically if you're coming from the town of Kodiak you will come to this intersection at mile 30.1. You will have to make the big decision of Right...

Kalsin Island Favorites

  • What to use for fishing....

There are several techniques for successful fishing. Pink salmon like small spinners and flys. Silver Salmon take a #3or #4 spinner. They will also take many patterns of flys and quite a few guys like the egg drifting method. Personally I like fly fishing the best but have used all methods. The Chum Salmon seem to respond to the larger spinners and...

  • Spend an afternoon at the Olds River

The Olds River is a very popular spot for tourists as it has a good run of 3 species of Salmon (Silver, Chum And Pink) and the drive isn't quite as long as going all the way to Pasagshak. The Olds is close to the Kalsin Bay Inn and the Northland Ranch. For myself I prefer the fast waters of the Mouth of the Pasagshak River which is 10 miles further...

  • Upper Olds River Late Autumn

This is a shot that I took on the late Autumn Chiniak Road trip that my buddy Nick (Kaloz) and I did last year. I thought it was interesting that I had basically the same shot but at a different time of year.
