Clamming – Clam Gulch State Rec Area

by onebadcat Written Feb 17, 2005

A great activity for children and adults who love to play in the sand. Clam Gulch is popular with families having young children because you can access the beach very easily. This is a beautiful area with views of the snow-capped volcanos across the inlet and steep sand cliffs at your back. There is a State Campground here which also has picnic tables, fireplaces, water and toilets. If you want to camp or park at the State Park get here plenty early to secure a spot.

For good clamming here you need to look for low tides that are -2 or lower. Try to be at your digging spot about an hour before low tide and keep moving out with the tide looking for air holes. The limit is 60 clams per person which amounts to a couple of nice ziplocs of meat. All you need is a shovel or clam gun, a five gallon bucket and a fishing licence. See the web address below for instructions on digging and cleaning your clams.

Usually the farther you go down/up the beach from the access road the more plentiful the clams. WARNING: Do not try to take your two-wheel drive vehicles down onto the beach! You WILL get stuck. If you don't have 4WD and good ground clearance hike the beach or hitchike with someone who has a truck or ATV.
