by emilienoelle Since Ketchikan is located in a rain forest, meaning that it rains there nearly every day of the year, it's a good idea to come prepared for wet weather. A raincoat and waterproof shoes are a good idea, and if you plan on hiking, bringing an extra pair of shoes in case one gets wet is a good idea, too.
Another item that may come in handy if you plan on hiking is bear repellent. Both black and brown bears roam the forests, and coming across one of them is not all that rare. Although most of the time the bears will get scared and run away, it's better to be safe than sorry. Leave a Comment

by dzni Pack light. Don't take anything you won't need. If you travel on the Alaska Marine Highway, you'll see what I mean... you don't want to bring much stuff. On a plane, it applies even more.
Well, weather was actually much warmer than in Seattle!! On the Inside Passage, weather was very cool to cold at times, and I was forced to get my fleece jacket out. I had jeans and sometimes a long shirt on for the majority of the ship-ride. However, it was at least 80 in Ketchikan (don't know if they were having a heat wave). Anyway, in the summer it can be warm, obviously, so I'd be sure to have shorts and long pants/cool weather gear in case. Ketchikan is the wettest city in the U.S. and it rains a bunch, though summer is the least wet time of the year, so plan accordingly. During the other seasons, the temperature remains fairly mild, receiving very little snow in the city itself, although the nearby mountain always has snow on it.
You're still in America... they've got everything, but maybe not so many 24 hour places for emergencies.
Bring what you feel most comfortable with. There's lots to take pictures of. I stayed with my smaller camera while walking around for convenience. Leave a Comment

Don't make the mistake we made: We thought Alaska means igloos and ice, freezing temperatures etc... We ended up sending half our clothes back by sea-mail. It is cold at times but don't get carried away, there can be some very warm days too. Talking summer time.
Take a video camera if you possibly can. Beware of backlighting on the camera!!
It's worth creating a web-based place to keep files, text, pictures, addresses and other lists. A place you can 'dip into' where ever you may be. Leave a Comment
