Millbay beach is 3½ miles from downtown and is a very popular spot for families to barbeque or just hang out. It's not the traditional type beach that most people think of. It is quite rocky and the water is VERY cold but the Kodiak kids are quite hearty and on quite a few days in July and August you will see kids swimming here! I'm to old and my bones hurt in the water so you won't see me in there!!!
The fireworks stand opens near the end of June and alot of the young boys feel that they have to start blasting fireworks in preparation of the July 4th celebration. My son is no exception. I limit him to a few rounds of firecrackers in the days leading to the 4th but on the 4th of July we buy lot's of bangers and boomers!!
Here in Kodiak you will see most families own a dog. Bringing the dog for a swim is great excercise for the dog and the owner. The owner has to throw a big stick as far out into the water as he/she can. Hopefully the dog brings it back! My dog is a sand eater!! I don't know why but he loves to eat beach sand! It must clean him out?!?
We also have a leash law or a come on command law which means the owner must be in control of his/her dog.
On those warm sunny days it is nice to get out to a beach with friends and family. We quite often go to White Sands Beach which is 11½ miles from downtown. There is a long beach with nice white powdery sand. We were just there a couple of days ago and my son had fun burying himself in the sand.
When we went to White Sand Beach my son decided to build his version of Angkor Wat which we visited in Cambodia 2002. It was near the time we were going to leave so the fine details couldn't be worked out. The sand at White Sand Beach is perfect for building sand castles.
