For some the Kodiak Crab Festival is loads of fun! But for others it is a tourist trap! Everything is priced quite high. Kids love it!! They are spending Mom and Dads money!! I know I handed out enough money during the 5 days the Festival was on!
Unique Suggestions: You gotta have a Bruin Burger, plate of King Crab Legs, Blackened Halibut Wrap, St Mary's Cheesburger, Pork on a stick and a Turkey Leg! If you don't experience these then you haven't been to the Crab Festival!!
Ye GODS! I can't tell you how silly tourists look fighting for a spot on the Russian river or Sargent creeks snagging pinks like crazy in the summer. Fishing on these two small rivers can rarely be rewarding, take the time, drive out a bit further either way and have a whole damn river to yourself. Don't fight, be polite!
Ok, I know you were expecting to read how to get ripped off in Kodiak. Well in general Kodiak is quite expensive because we are on an Island and every thing must be shipped in. So expect to pay more for items than you would in the lower 48. But if you're interested in the Trap Club you can contact the VFW Post that is out the road towards Monashka Bay.
Unique Suggestions: Bring a gun!!
Many visitors are under the mistaken impression that you will see the wildlife. You can, but it will cost extra. The bears do not come into town, though there some excellent displays of stuffed bears. Bear viewing can be arranged by local guides, or local air charters. Eagles are all over town in spring, but leave when the tourists come, so you will need to go outside of town to see them. Those of us who live here get to see plenty.
I have heard of a scam by the rental car companies. Our roads are very bad outside of town, so you should insist on a full sized spare. The doughnuts die quickly. And being stranded is not a fun place to be.
