    Lake Gertrude, Fort Abercrombie

Another popular water spot with Kodiak residents is Lake Gertrude at the Fort Abercrombie State Park, an old WWII battery of sorts left in something of its original state by the Navy Department. The lake is roughly 1,000 feet long and a few hundred feet wide, and heavily forested on every perimeter except the one facing the sea (about 200 feet beyond the customary access point). Fish are stocked in the lake and sea gulls freshen up here before heading out into the surf, but these are generally not a bother. If you can tolerate the cold temperature of the water (mid to upper 50s F in summer), Lake Gertrude is a nice spot to relax.

    salmonberry

Salmonberry is a prevalent plant throughout the island and town. It is not uncommon for Kodiak residents to have a bush or two growing on or near their own property (ask herzog63). This pulpy fruit is not the most succulent of the island's berries, but in July and August it is a familiar "fast food" for residents and visitors alike. The berries grow in a conical bunch, with each berry having a stem or hair-like projection, but the fruit is easy to digest and actually quite filling for its size. Unless the bushes sit on private property, go ahead and tear off a handful and see for yourself.

    Monashka Bay's

With no space on the immediate waterfront to enjoy the ocean, Kodiak residents usually flock to a number of nearby coves and bays, where beaches are often of fine "sand." Actually these are composed of volcanic dust with other components, but their smooth feel comes close enough to qualify. Residents have a large variety of swimming holes to choose from, but one of the better stretches of "white sand" beach is around the Monashka Bay area, a gorgeous sight in its own right.

    Scott says:
    I was excited too!!!
    Dave says:
    LOL hahah great
    Scott says:
But it took me about 1 hour to finally land one !!
    Dave says:
    wowza
    Scott says:
He was a big one that was so aggresive!!
    Dave says:
    great!!
    Scott says:
I saw him cross in front of 2 other fish and grab my fly!!
    Scott says:
Then he came flying right out of the water !!!!
    Scott says:
    about 3 feet !!!!
    Dave says:
stop it! I can't take it no more!!!!
    Dave says:
    I gotta go fish!!!!
    Dave says:
    3 feet!!
    Scott says:
I was so excited I thought I was going to lose him!! He went to the other side of the river and was jumping all over the place near a sunken log!! I thought for sure he was going to go under it and I would lose him
    Dave says:
yes, I always expect the worst things to happen too!
    Scott says:
But luckilly I got his head turned and I pulled him back to the middle of the river were I fought with him until he was getting tired
    Dave says:
    yes
    Scott says:
Then I was getting him near my side of the river and he dove and was trying to go under the ledge and cut the line!! I was scared again!!!
    Scott says:
I thought for sure he would cut the line on the rock!!
    Dave says:
    yes, that's scarey!
    Dave says:
    yes
    Scott says:
Have you seen fish drive their head into the ground when you fight them?? It's like they know that they are attached to a line that can be cut easily!!
    Scott says:
This guy started doing that!! Right in front of me
    Dave says:
    yes, I think so!
    Scott says:
So I was trying to keep his head up and directed towards me
    Dave says:
    Trouts do that sometimes
    Dave says:
    o
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
I almost got him to shore and he made a mad dash and took my line all the way to the other side of the river!!!
    Scott says:
But that was his last energy!!
    Dave says:
    wow!!!!!!!!!!
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
after that I worked the line back in and he couldn't fight hard anymore!!
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
ONly a couple of tries to move his head side to side but his energy was wasted

    2 Red Salmon

    Scott says:
I thought the water might be to low to have fish still laying in it...
    Scott says:
    But I was wrong!!!
    Dave says:
    ok
    Dave says:
    awsome!
    Scott says:
I could see 3 people fishing in the whole that I wanted to go with. Grandson , Son and Father. Today is fathers day so I thought they must be spending time together!! So I didn't want to bother them..
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
But I walked up the river to about 100feet below them and there were about 15 Red Salmon laying there. So I threw my fly out and on the the 3 rd drift I caught a Red Salmon!!
    Scott says:
    Small one about 3-4 lbs
    Dave says:
    wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Scott says:
Then I fished for another hour on the same school and I couldn't land one!
    Scott says:
I lost about 4 of them!!!
    Dave says:
the size doesn't matter, it's always a pleasure to catch one!
    Dave says:
    no!
    Dave says:
    well that's fishing
    Scott says:
So I moved upstream from them and there was a school of about 7 fish I fished on that school for about 30minutes and couldn't land one there!!
    Scott says:
I lost about 5 of them!!
    Scott says:
    Some great fighters too!!!!
    Dave says:
no! LOL I hate when it happens all the time
    Scott says:
Jumping right out of the water but they threw my hook out of their mouth and my fly ended up stuck in the top of trees!!!!
    Scott says:
    That sucks when that happens!!
    Dave says:
    yes, that really sucks...!
    Dave says:
    I hate when that happens
    Scott says:
    The the 3
    Scott says:
then the 3 Amigos finally had enough!!
    Dave says:
    hahah
    Scott says:
They went home without even having ever getting a fish on their line!!
    Scott says:
Great I went to their spot and sure enough there was about 50 laying in there!!!
    Scott says:
    My eyes grew big!!!
    Dave says:
    50!!!
    Scott says:
    yes 50 !!
    Dave says:
Yes, I would be excited if I saw that!
    Scott says:
I was so excited ...I was thinking this will be easy!!!!
    Dave says:
    yes

    Fun Fishing Story!! Part 1

    by herzog63 Written Jun 20, 2003

    One of my Red Salmon

The following is a cut and paste of the chat that fellow Vt'er Dave_21 and I had after a great morning of fishing on the Buskin River on Sunday June 15,2003. We are both crazy about fishing! If you're not into fishing you might miss some of the enthusiasm that is in the conversation but I hope you enjoy it!! It is basically unedited so there are many spelling mistakes etc... It's just 2 friends chatting. David is from Sweden....

    Dave says:
    vart är du min vän??
    Dave says:
I just remember! It's sunday! You open your store late on sundays!! You are lazy!
    Scott says:
    hey
    Scott says:
    you in?
    Scott says:
    I caught some beauties today!!
    Dave says:
    yes!
    Scott says:
    I just walked in
    Dave says:
    tell me!?!??!?!??!?!
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
I got up at 5 am and went fishing
    Dave says:
wow! Dave likes that kind of stuff!!
    Scott says:
from 5:15 to 7:30 I fished at the mouth of the Buskin River and the tide was a falling tide almost at low tide so it was good to spot fish coming in!! but guess what!? not one fish came in!!!!
    Dave says:
    no??
    Dave says:
    LOL
    Scott says:
so at 7:30 I went upstream about 1 mile to Aurey Park parking lot and worked my way all the way back down to the mouth so about 1½ mile walk downstream and guess what?
    Dave says:
    no??
    Scott says:
I saw 1 steelhead very small and you can't keep them on the Buskin River as they are trying to improve the run of Steelhead
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
And I saw 2 small Dolly Varden trout jump out of the water
    Dave says:
    wow, ok
    Scott says:
So I walked back upstream to my car going home in dissapointment!!!
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
I got out to the intersection and I could hear the fish calling my name!!!
    Dave says:
    hahahahha
    Scott says:
so I turned the car around and went back with the Eye of the Eagle!!!!!
    Scott says:
I went to the area that is called the canyon!!
    Dave says:
    hahhahah LOL ok
    Dave says:
    ok
    Scott says:
That is where I caught the first 2 salmon of the season!!

    Fishing with Flys

    Red Fly

Fishing for Red Salmon can be fun if you are armed with the right flys for the moment. My favorite fly this season or at least it's the one that's given me the most luck is this one in the photo. It is on a #6 Gamakatsu hook with thick red yarn. Very basic but very effective! The last Red Salmon I caught actually attacked my fly! He crossed over 2 other salmon in the Buskin River and took my fly! It was a great fight!!
There are many other useful patterns also. You can ask me or check any of the local sportsman shops to get more info.

    Lupine

In the summer in Kodiak there are so many kinds of beautiful flowers to photograph!! The Lupine is one of my favorites. Locally it's know as fireweed as when the mountain meadows are full of Lupine they can appear as they are on fire!
For your closeups don't forget the macro lense.

    Red Salmon Roe

For a lot of people the Salmon Roe is their favorite part of the Salmon. I usually don't eat it myself. The roe is either saved and cured to be used as fishing bait for Silver Salmon. Or I toss it to the seagulls that usually fly by as I clean my fish. I did fry up these two to try them as I hadn't done it in a while and I found them to be quite tasty so I'll probably save them and eat them now. There are many ways of curing and eating them.

    5 LB Red Salmon

Starting in June through the end of July here in Kodiak the Red Salmon fishing is just awesome!! I enjoy fly fishing for them. They can be quite tricky to catch as when they enter the river from the ocean they stop feeding and are concentrating on making there way up river to the lake for the spawning grounds! The fish in the picture is about 5-6 Lbs. I caught it at the Buskin River. If you ever come here I can tell you some of the good secret holes!! But I'll have to blind fold you when I take you there! hahha

    Red Salmon

I've had a couple of emails lately asking me how come Red Salmon are called Red Salmon as the outside of the fish looks silver. Well this photo is the answer. The fillets are a bright red and are very delicous! There are hundreds of recipes for preparing them but my favorite is also the easiest! Fried in Butter with salt and pepper until very brown served with rice and string beans. These were caught by me in the morning before I went to work.
