This area is probably the most popular area for using a snowmachine as it is the area that recieves the most snow that's not too far from town. There are several trails that are on both sides of the road. Beware of Avalanches!! Snowmachines have been involved in most of the avalanches involving humans here in Kodiak!!
Here you can see a couple of snowboarders preparing their gear for the hike up and a day of fun on Pyramid Mountain!! This sunday (1/18/04) is quite strange as there were only 2 other groups of people up at the pass having fun. Compared with last Sunday that had over 20 groups at 12:00 Noon. I guess it's because of the AFC and NFC Championship Football games???
Here you can see me and Hadji taking a short break...really not a break just stopping for a photo in the sunshine. From looking at the photo you wouldn't think it was -6 F but was!!
Equipment: Warm layers.....on this hike Hadji discarded his jacket along the trail to be picked up later even though it was -6 F he was quite hot hiking!
Here you can see Hadji going down the hill on one of his runs....He isn't an expert yet and quite often the bottom of the hill is just a big crash!! hahaha Snow, Arms, legs and a snowboard all going in different directions.
The small hill in front of the Ski Chalet is a great little run that allows you enough speed for a thrill without having to climb too high up the mountain. It seems to be our favorite.
Equipment: Bring a toboggan or sled and have some great fun!!
Once your at the pass there are many opportunities for snow boarding. But becarefull as there aren't any official trails. So you will have to know your own abilities!! There is a Coast Guard operated Ski Chalet but it is on the opposite side of where most snow boarders go. At the Chalet there is only a small hill that would be suitable for beginners or sledders. The Chalet isn't open regular hours and it's not operated as a regular business. It's only opened on days when they think people might be up there enjoying themselves. I have never seen it open and have only heard about it being open. So that will give you some idea of the irregular hours that it's open.
Equipment: You will have to bring your own Snowboard or skiis or sled or Tube!! You can see Hadji and Duke taking a break from the morning of fun.
