Can you spot the 2 Bald Eagles in this photo?

Can you spot the 2 Bald Eagles in this photo?, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  You may have to enlarge the photo you can see them in the trees in the upper right hand corner. They are scouting the river for late run silver salmon and small animals that may come down near the river for a drink!!

Early morning sun from behind Barometer Mountain

Early morning sun from behind Barometer Mountain, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  As you near the pass in the early morning in Winter you can look back and watch the sun rise just behind the mountain. If you enlarge the photo you will see lot's of Wild Rabbit tracks in the foreground. We saw tons of Rabbit tracks today (January 18, 2004) but not a single...

Transportation

Early morning on the road

Early morning on the road, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  If you get on the road early ..say as the morning starts to come alive you'll have many chances for Deer and fox spotting along the road....but at that time you probably won't be able to photograph them as there won't be enough light. As you drive out the road you will have...

Bring your own vehicle

Bring your own vehicle, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  There isn't any public transportation to get out here such as buses. Well you could hire a taxi in the town of Kodiak but it would cost about $50 to get out here. So if you are traveling here either make a local friend or rent a car. In the winter 4 wheel drive is much...

Local Customs

Steam is rising

Steam is rising, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  As we were coming back from our hike and we came around the corner where we could see the whole inner part of Anton Larsen Bay I could see what I thought was blowing snow at the head of the bay.....There was a slight breeze in the air but nothing that was going to kick up...

Sitka Black Tailed Deer

Sitka Black Tailed Deer, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  In the middle of the photo you can see a Sitka Black Tailed Deer. I stopped to take a photo and all it did was lift it's head to look at us one time then went right back to eating some grass that was sticking out of the snow under the trees. You'll have to enlarge the photo...

Blanket of snow on the trees

Blanket of snow on the trees, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  I just love the way the snow builds up on the spruce trees after a snow storm and gives the forest a whole different look. Winter Wonder Land!!!

Warnings and Dangers

Grave Markers in the snow

Grave Markers in the snow, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  You can see the 3 grave markers in the snow that memorialize the spot that some sport fisherman and their pilot hit the ground a few years ago. Small planes fly through this pass frequently as it cuts down on flying time to get to the south end of the west side of the...

Travel Warning sign

Travel Warning sign, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  This sign is put up to make sure you are prepared for adventure in the winter!! Once you go past this sign you are on your own!! The roads are not plowed on a regular basis although this year they are!! Everytime that I have driven the road they have been cleared but of...

Drive too fast and you'll end up like this guy!!

Drive too fast and you'll end up like this guy!!, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  On the way back from our hike we came across a Suburban that had not been able to make a turn and he crashed through the snow berm and was stuck....There wasn't anybody around so I figured this guys vehicle would make a great VT photo!!! The truck still had dealer plates on...

Do not walk on the ice in Anton Larsen Bay!!

Do not walk on the ice in Anton Larsen Bay!!, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Some winters Anton Larsen Bay gets frozen over and other winters it doesn't. This winter it has but the temperatures have NOT been consistantly low enough to create thick ice across the bay. It sure looks frozen and you might actually make it across.......but you might not...

Hair Pin Turns

Hair Pin Turns, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  The Anton Larsen Bay Road has a few Hair Pin curves in it. A couple of them are blind hair pin curves. This one is fairly near the end of the road and isn't a blind one but surely in winter you won't want to be speeding going into it or you won't come out of it!! ahaha

Off The Beaten Path

And back to the car again

And back to the car again, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  In the middle of the photo you can see our car. This was our view from the last little hill coming back from the hike. This is a great area to hike in during winter time as you can spot wildlife and the chances of running into a bear are very slim...Although it could...

Coming out of the Spruce trees......

Coming out of the Spruce trees......, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Here's Duke coming out of the Spruce Trees. It is quite dark under the cover of the snow covered spruce trees and seemed great to see the sunshine on the other side. Although the echoes of the squirells was a beautiful sound inside the forest.

Sports & Outdoors

Snowmachines are popular

Snowmachines are popular, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  This area is probably the most popular area for using a snowmachine as it is the area that recieves the most snow that's not too far from town. There are several trails that are on both sides of the road. Beware of Avalanches!! Snowmachines have been involved in most of the...

Snow Boarders Preparing for the hike

Snow Boarders Preparing for the hike, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Here you can see a couple of snowboarders preparing their gear for the hike up and a day of fun on Pyramid Mountain!! This sunday (1/18/04) is quite strange as there were only 2 other groups of people up at the pass having fun. Compared with last Sunday that had over 20...

Father and Son taking a break on the hike

Father and Son taking a break on the hike, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Here you can see me and Hadji taking a short break...really not a break just stopping for a photo in the sunshine. From looking at the photo you wouldn't think it was -6 F but was!! Warm layers.....on this hike Hadji discarded his jacket along the trail to be picked up...

Trees frozen in time.........

Trees frozen in time........., Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Just looking at these trees makes me feel cold sitting here infront of the computer loading this stuff up.....but as we hiked through the area I didn't even think about being cold!! haha But I did think the trees looked quite interesting all frozen like that.

This is for MrClay - Red Cloud River in winter

This is for MrClay - Red Cloud River in winter, Larsen Island

herzog63 Says:  Red Cloud River is a scenic spot for making photos, Fishing, or just listening to the water gurlge....but that is in summer time. In the winter there is as stillness in the air and I could only hear a muffled gurgling sound under the ice as the river flowed under the blanket...
