If you're running low on gas Nenana has the A Frame Sevice station right at the intersection of the Parks Highway. They also have the essential groceries, Sandwiches, pay phone, Atm, and the all time Alaskan winter favorite ....Ice!! haha I know some of you get a kick out of that ....buying ice in Alaska...well in the summertime there isn't ice everywhere. You still have 57 miles before you reach Fairbanks but there are gas stations along the way too.
Hours are 6:00 am - 12:00 pm
You can get to Nenana by train, Bus or in my opinion the best way is to have your own vehicle. Of course hitchhiking is another possibility for the adventurous.
A great adventure would be to be able to hop on a River Boat and got up the Tanana River and connect onto the Yukon River and go all the way to the Bering Sea via the Yukon River!! That would take some great planning though.
You can find the train schedule and prices at www.alaskarailroad.com. Taking the railroad is by no means cheap. But it could be a great ride to just sit back and relax and watch the great alaska wilderness go by. Here in the photo you can see my wife and son posing with one of the old transport trains that the workers would use to go up and down the rails. It was very cold that morning...I think you can tell that from my wifes expression on her face! haha It went like this...."honey let's take a photo" "Ok"....Click...run right back to the car!! hahah Not me but her.
