Don't look for too much nightlife in the small towns. With most of the towns bearly populated, there isn't much call for nightlife. Of course, I was back on the ship by then so I might have missed out on something.

The Aurora borrealis. You will need some alcohol to keep you warm while waiting for it. Only visible on clear night if weather pattern has been okay. Most predictions of it were inaccurate. If you are patient you will be rewarded.
anchorage is the biggest 'city' in alaska. and it's a good starting point to see the surrounding area. while there, you have to have a beer at Chilkoot Charlie's. it's classic, rough and tough alaska. don't wear you penny loafers and polo shirt in this place. unless you like to get thrown around like a rag doll. these days, it's a popular hangout for everyone actually. if you want the real deal, try some out of the way places around town and outside of town. go to wasilla or even farther talkeetna. there's a great bar on the way to the hilltop ski area in anchorage. look for it on the left while going down that road. i don't remember any signs out front, but you'll know it when you see it. the java joint ( a big pink building across the street from REI) is no longer there, but there should be some kind of cool coffee house scene or a good place to eat. the dress code is well.........if...
This is a local hang out for the native people. It can be a bit rough but is well worth stopping in to have alook. Just keep you hand on your wallet. There is not dress code
There's not too much to do at night in this small town. While in Ketchikan, a lot of people went to the taverns to get a drink. There are multiple places to have a brew and hangout. Jeans and t-shirt.

Monday or Tuesday nights are Karaoke night at the Inn. In a small town of only 80 people, let's hope there is some talent! Casual, as in all of Alaska
