    Tons of sea birds

    by herzog63 Updated Dec 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: On the way to Puffin Island you will pass several rocky outcroppings that are home to many sea birds. You can see Cormorants, shearwaters,Murre's, Sea Gulls and sometimes Puffins!! LOL We spotted everything except the Puffins!! Puffin Island is a bird nesting area protected by the Migratory Bird Act so don't be messing with the birds here!! You could be accessed stiff fines for this.

Fondest memory: If you look very close to the photo you can see birds sitting on top of the rocks.

The Fireweed is tough to walk through!

    by herzog63 Written Sep 15, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: As you can see Evan hiking across the top of the island through the fireweed which has already lot's it's beautiful colors as we were here in September. But if you could see this during late July and August you would be amazed by the colors of the fireweed blossoms!! But during the time when the fireweed is 3-4 feet tall and as thick as it is you will have them trying to trip you the whole way!

    Going down into the bunker

    by herzog63 Written Sep 15, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The Bunker had an angle to it going down under the ground on either side of a big room. The overgrowth has really taken over as the military abandoned this area long ago. I thought it would make a great spot to fim a movie!! Tomb Raider IV?

    WW II Ruins

    by herzog63 Written Sep 15, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: All over Puffin Island you will encounter ruins from the WW II era. This bunker is quite interesting as it is on the backside of the island facing towards the town of Kodiak. It is about 200 feet long and about 7 feet wide and there isn't much left of the roof.

    Protective Sea Lions

    by herzog63 Written Sep 14, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I have seen the Big Males standing their ground against an attacking pod of Killer Whales. There was sheer power and terror in the air while this fighting was going on!! The Killer Whales where coming right out of the water up onto the rocks trying to get a Sea Lion. But on that day they were unsuccessful. Again I didn't have a camera so that is another Wild Kindom memory!

    Stellar Sea Lions

    by herzog63 Written Sep 14, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The Stellar Sea Lion is one of the Killer Whales main food! I have seen a Killer Whale catch and tear a Sea Lion to shreds about 40 feet in front of me. This happened in 1990 and I didn't have a camera or video camera with me!! Only a Wild Kingdom memory for me now.

    Puffin Island

    by herzog63 Written Sep 15, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This is what the island looked like as we approached. It had a bit of a haunting appeal to it. As the island was totally flat topped with steep cliffs of about 75 supporting it.
