Old Dock

Puffin Island was used as part of the US Defense during WW II. There are many remnants of that era still on the island. These pilings aren't of much use anymore but at one time they were part of a dock that was used for mooring military boats. During the war Puffin Island had the following: an anti motor torpedo boat battery, consisting of a pair of 90 mm guns on T3 mounts ( The 90 mm shells weighed between 42 and 49 lbs each), a pair 90 MM guns on M1A1 mounts and supporting barracks, officer's quarters, administration building, searchlights, DEC bunker and battery command. M1 range finder, an SCR-593 (BC-728 4-channel radio receiver), and a SCR-547 radar located at a ground elevation of 45 feet with the antenna only 9 feet above ground. This was part a of the Kodiak Harbor Defense system.

Stellar Sea Lions

Stellar Sea Lions are a pretty cool animal as they are the largest of all "Eared" Seals. Males can grow to over 2000 Lbs while females max out at just under 600 Lbs. They get their name (Lion) from the Big Males as when they are older they grow a think neck hair similar to a Lion so thats where the name Sea Lion comes from. They don't roar like a lion but they sure can make a lot of noise!!

Bunker

From this hidden bunker the US military would scan the waters of Kodiak looking for Japanese submarines trying to sneak into the harbor. Now the Japanese tourists or anyone can enjoy the views of the bay from this spot.

Tunnel

Once you enter the tunnel you can walk for about 25 feet and you can see the light from the other side. I'm sure during rainy periods there will be lot's of water here but it was quite dry when we visited.

Old Crab Pot

Puffin Island could be a nice spot for some beach combing as the island is located at the opening to Womens Bay and alot of stuff washes up in there. We didn't find anything cool except this old crab pot that was buried deep in the sand. Old Japanese Glass Floats are the prize that people around here love to find!!

St Hermans Harbor

A good spot to leave from is St Hermans Harbor and that's where Evan keeps his skiff. There are lot's of boats to see and I think it can be quite picturesque on a clear morning such as the one we chose.

Barometer Mountian

Barometer Mountain is a popular summer time hike for the locals! There is a well beaten trail to the top. It is not a real easy climb and can be quite dangerous if you are not paying attention. Near the top the rock is quite loose and the trail is very steep in places! I took this shot from St Hermans Harbor.

Stellar Sea Lions

Here you can see the Stellar Sea Lions just lounging on their special made dock. One word of caution as you get closer to it you will get some aromatic smells penetrating your nasal passages!!
