When you're walking long you will have to realize that this island was part of a military base and when then left they didn't take care of all the dangers!! There are many air vents and old foundations hidden in the thick vegetation!! I broke through some old boards while walking along! luckily I wasn't hurt!! Or luckily I didn't fall into a 20 foot deep pit!! hahaha
Here in Kodiak there are rules and laws on the water! Personal floatation devices must be provided. No operating boats while drunk! No shooting animals out of season. No taken an overlimit of fish. Driving reckless isn't allowed either. So if you don't want to end up in the clink be on your best behavior as these guys are a presence in the area!! They are also there to help you in an emergency also!! Check with the harbor masters office before leaving port to see which radio frequency they monitor.
LOL...We didn't bring one as I didn't have any idea what we would find on the island. I didn't know we would find underground bunkers to explore. I took this photo in total darkness using the flash of my camera so we could see where we were standing!! We were about 3 feet from the wall and didn't even know it. LOL We were taking little tiny steps to avoid falling into some hidden pit as there wasn't any light at all in this area!!
There are old timbers from the roof and and hidden holes in the ground and lot's ferns and small alders growing in the bunker now. So I recommend choosing your steps wisely. There could be old rusty nails waiting for an unsuspecting foot!
You wouldn't want to be stuck on Puffin Island as it doesn't receive that many visitors so make sure you have a good anchor for the skiff and make sure it is secure!! The currents that race past Puffin Island going into Womens Bay are amazingly strong!! In the photo you can see our skiff on the beach...It was secure!!
As you head out of St Hermans Harbor you can take a ride to the Sea Lion Dock. It is a special dock that the city has built for the Sea Lions and luckily the Sea Lions like it. It is away from normal boat traffic and quite often there will be 20 or more Stellar Sea Lions lounging on their special dock. It is illegal to feed the Sea Lions with fines up to $10,000 can be assessed for doing it. Also if you are in a boat it is illegal to harrass the Sea Lions or throw stuff at them!!! Be on your best behavior or you could find yourself in trouble!!
As you're leaving St Hermans harbor you must keep your vessel at 5 MPH or less as there is a no wake law!! The boat owners don't want boats make huge waves which will cause their boats to hit against the docks and get all banged up! The harbor master does patrols in these areas and they are not afraid to write you a ticket!!
