Refuge Island Things to Do

  • "Born Semi-Free"

There are quite a few horses that are roaming semi-free in the Kalsin Bay - Narrow Cape area. There are fences but they must know how to walk around the fence as quite often they will be in the road. I loved the way they were hiding in the fog. The photo is taken right across from Lake Rose Tead.

  • Bear Bread

Bear Bread is some sort of Fungus that grows on trees and stumps all over Kodiak. They make great props of photos. I just happened to notice this one just after a rain and I liked the way the water was beading up on the surface.

  • The early morning calm of Lake Rose Tead

This is taken from the approach side of the lake. From this spot you can also watch the resident King Fishers that sit on the electric lines and fence posts and dive into the water and catch the small salmon fry.

  • Middle Bay and the Fog

Here is a shot that you may remember from my homepage as I used it up there for a month or so. It's taken in the early morning hours over looking the head of Middle Bay. As usual I love using the fog in some of my photos.

  • Kalsin Bay

This is a early morning shot of the Kalsin Bay with the Olds River in View as well as the Marin Range. This is a great spot for camping or just spending time with family and friends.

  • Hiking trails

There are lot's of hiking trails similar to this one. If you want to hike in the summer in Kodiak and are a casual hiker you will want one of these trails as the undergrowth of Kodiak will pull you down if you try making your own trail!!

  • Strange Weather

Here in Kodiak we sure can have some strange weather. As you can see in the foreground the sun is shining at my back but the fog is making a nuisance of itself for the Mariners!! This type of weather is very dangerous for the small boats that ply the waters of Kodiak Island. It's not uncommon for a boat to run aground near Spruce Cape in this kind...

  • ????? Super Shake

What kind of animal is this? Wolf? Bear? Moose? Squirrel? hahaha No! It's Duke my dog doing the super shake off after an evening of swimming at Lake Gertrude.

  • Fort Abercrombie State Recreation Site

This shot is taken at the end of Lake Gertrude in Fort Abercrombie State Recreation Site. Quite often there will be beautiful views of the ocean from this spot but on this day there was thick fog that was lingering just off shore.

Refuge Island Local Customs

  • The lushness of summer

If you get the chance to visit in the months of June to August you will enjoy the Very Lush Green of the island. You can see why Kodiak has the nickname "Emerald Isle"

  • Rugged Natural Beauty

Cape Chiniak has some great rugged natural beauty!! I can enjoy looking at it in any weather. I guess a nice sunny day is the best but if you are prepared for the elements a day like this is fun as well. To get here you must drive all the way to the end of the Chiniak Highway then get out and hike the rest of the way. The area is called Cape...

  • Chiniak Bog

You can find scenes like this along the Chiniak Highway. They are good spots to look for beaver. None were spotted on this day. But I've had them walk right across the road in front of me.

Refuge Island Off The Beaten Path

  • Pasagshak Bay........

The silvery, sparkly Pasagshak Bay. I love these scenes that just pop up here in Kodiak. You gotta have your camera ready at all times if you want to capture these moments. Sometimes they are only there for moments as the weather is always changing!!

  • Home on the Range!!

Just like in the Wild West we have a great herd of Buffalo owned by a local rancher but they have a free range. Sometimes they are difficult to find and other times they are very near the road. I love to watch them!!

Refuge Island Favorites

  • Ranch setting

This old building has been recently refurbished and can be found near Lake Rose Tead. When I first arrived in Kodiak in 1982 it was used by local rancher Joe Zentner as a plane hanger as he landed his plane right on the road. For alot of recent years it appeared abandonded but it is now a working ranch.

  • Russian Salmonberries

If you are in Kodiak at the end of July through August keep your eyes open for Salmon Berries especially the rarer Russian Salmon Berry. The Russian variety is a Golden Orange which is different than the bright Redness of the normal Salmon Berry.

  • Old's River Meadow

There aren't many trees in the meadow but I like the way the early morning sun cuts through the branches. It's one of my favorite spots to shoot black and white photos.
