Fast Eddys is known throughout Alaska and here on VT as the place to eat in Tok. It’s not the only place, but it’s the best one. Open late and open all year, it’s already better than many restaurants across the state. We had both dinner and breakfast here and both experiences were wonderful. When we went in for dinner, the power went out from a thunderstorm and we were worried we wouldn’t get our food, but it arrived 30 seconds later. Good timing, considering we ordered only like 15 minutes beforehand. The menu ranges from pasta dishes (like lasagna) to burgers to pizzas to desserts and specials (for lunch and dinner). Even vegetarian dishes that you wouldn’t expect out here. The breakfast menu has quite a selection as well…perfect for those cold mornings. Pancakes, French toast, omelets and many side dishes to put together whatever you want. There is a local flair to it too…like reindeer sausage and lots of items with Canadian bacon. The prices are great for these things…for steak during dinner, a bit more.

For dinner I got the mushroom swiss burger. It was HUGE! Bobby got the teriyaki chicken sandwich which was also very large. With the special burgers, you get your choice of regular fries or the specialty ones (sour cream and onion, beer battered, seasoned) or onion rings. If you rather have soup or the salad bar, you can get that too.

We split the French Toast for breakfast and it too was wonderful. Large enough that both of us were full and the coffee just kept coming. Great service, very friendly people and a comfortable family restaurant/diner atmosphere. Wish we had one here in Anchorage.

  • After a full day of touring the town of Seward, we were hungry and tired. Had a great meal at this local Fish House, food was good and service too. The place was packed with people.

From the menu, we ordered the daily special which was fresh halibut and it was good. Others at our table ordered the King Salmon which they loved*

A cannot really compare as i didn't visit too many restaurants while in the States. What makes it so special?

Definitely not the quality / price of the food. But if you stop by in front of the restaurant you will see the Trans Alaskan Pipeline ahead, the Yukon River on your right and the endless tundra on the left. It's quite special I guess.

The restaurant was a bit expensive, more expensive than avarage but up here everything is more expensive not just the food.

I had fries with pickles. It's very good if you're hungry!

The dining car is a comfortable place to relax with large windows and booths, you can sit and drink coffee and play cards or order a meal. Beware though, the dining car ws staffed by one person, and she had to take the orders then go cook, and was doing one table at a time, so order well before you are hungry!

In the morning we had a muffin with sliced fruit. and in the afternoon we had the "Miner's Bowl" which is a warmed sourdough bread bowl filled with piping hot chili, laced with Jack Daniels, and topped with cheese and onions. Served with a green salad for $8.

This coffeehouse is located in the former chapel of a Methodist church. The coffeehouse is now decorated with paitings and crafts of local dealers.

The coffee in Alaska is fabulous. Stumbling across this coffeehouse after three days at sea was a God send! I eagerly wrapped my cold hands around the warm coffee cup and enjoyed sip after sip.

    Moose's tooth: Try local beers

They do lots of beer in Alaska. There are many local brewerys and then the big Alaskan Brewing Company, which makes products like Alaskan Amber, Alaskan Pale, Alaskan Stout etc...

I am not a huge fan of beer, but lighter choices are better tasting and yes, US beer is definitely better than dark European... :) Sorry guys.

Moose's tooth is an awesome place and they say that the beer here is the best. At least the tap parties are incredible popular. They advertise to be award winning taste of frontier, so go and taste.

More of Moose's tooth food on my Anchorage section.

  • Can't remember the name, but a place in Haines does an all-you-can eat Dungeness crab special.
Absolutely massive crabs, amazingly fresh. I'm a big eater and could only manage 2 1/2 of them!

  • Brew their own beer and their spent grain is used to make the bread which you can buy at the local bakery. Just ask your wait person, and stock up. The bread's not so great in the 49th state.

    Homemade spent grain bread.

The Pipeline Club (Valdez): Dine where Capt. Hazelwood Got Drunk

    Only Capt. Hazelwood is
    missing from this photo

One of the disappointments about Alaska is that there were very few special restaurants. However, there is one must visit restaurant bar if your in Valdez: the Pipeline Club. While you can eat an excellent dinner there (I had salmon) the real reason to go is to have a drink in the very same bar where Exxon Valdez Capt. Joseph Hazelwood famously got hammered before the world's most damaging oil spill.
Admittedly, we weren't sure how to approach this issue with the locals, as the oil spill was only about seven years old -- i.e. recent history -- when we were in town. In fact, Capt. Hazelwood, who left the tanker's bridge before the crash to allegedly sleep off his drunk, didn't even get convicted of negligence until 1991. So we sheepishly asked where Capt. Hazelwood drank at the information center and the woman told us about the Pipeline Club, though she asked us not to make a big deal about it as the locals were still sensitive.
When we got there, we had an hour wait for dinner so we went into the bar and had a couple of beers while watching the locals play satellite trivia. After watching the guy next to me make a few mistakes, I started helping him and his score gradually started moving to the top of the world-wide standings. Soon we started chatting about other things and I asked him to take a picture of me, Andrea and Mr. Moonie at the bar. He really liked Mr. Moonie.
Then he decided to let us on to a little "local secret", pointing out exactly where at the bar Capt. Hazelwood sat on the fateful night of 23 March 1989-- the corner opposite of where we were. We thanked him for sharing that knowledge and soon got called for dinner.
