The yard sale scene is HUGE is Sitka. If you are staying there for a few days and one of those days is Saturday, you should check this out. It's serious business here. The Friday newspaper has "Sunshine Corner" (kind of ironic in the rainforest) which lists all the yard sales for the weekend. Locals get up at 6, show up at 7:30 for the sales that start at 8. When they finally open, it's chaos. There's good reason for this, though--you can find some of the best stuff at these things. A good number of the people who live in Sitka are government employees who get moved around or other people who only stay for a short period of time. It would cost them a lot more to ship their stuff or take it with them on the ferry when they move, so they just sell it.
If they aren't selling it at these yard sales, you can listen to "Problem Corner" on the radio every day at 11am (I think that's what time it is) or on Sitka.com, under the bulletin board section.
Sitka is largely a fishing community, so the dress code has taken that road as well. I was really surprised, coming from the east coast when I first went out to a bar and people were wearing rubber boots. They are called X-tra tuffs and people wear them everywhere--to weddings, out to restaurants, for daily walks and rides, for a night on the town. Then might roll them down to the ankle but chances are, you'll see these boots. Don't be surprised or judge anyone by the way the are dressed, a lot of people in Sitka are very wealthy.
They will also be very surprised that you either never heard of them or that you haven't owned multiple pairs of these throughout your life.
