It will rain
Luggage and bags: waterproof luggage
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Raincoats, parkas, layers, rainpants, waterproof shoes
Photo Equipment: Waterproof or resistant photo equip
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Waterproof gear
Miscellaneous: Umbrella if you so desire. Chances are, it won't be a torrential downpour, but a lot of people are used to things being cancelled or delayed because of rain. The show goes on in Sitka or it would never happen.
- Hiking and Walking
Pack Light and Casual
Luggage and bags: Maximum of two per person both of which will pass the carry-on test. Pack for half the trip. Do laundry if you need to, or better don't take anything you wouldn't wear twice and could combine to make a new outfit. Alaska is most definitely not a fashion show.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Layers Layers Layers
Good hiking boots or very comfortable walking shoes with good soles and a waterproof shell are essential. Umbrellas are pretty useless in the wind. You can even get by without a coat except in the winter. I didn't take a coat and I still found myself shedding layers, even after the first sunstantial fall cold snap and snow on the surrounding mountains. Take a fleece sweatshirt and long underwear and you are ready for anything nature has to offer from May to September.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Mosquito repellent, though I did't wear it or need it in september and we spent a fair amount of time in the woods. Meclizine for motion sickness (Dramamine non drowsy) Makes you a little sleepy, but not hung over.
Photo Equipment: A zoom is really nice for wildlife shots. Binoculars are very useful.
- Family Travel
Luggage and bags: if possible and only going to sitka for a short period to fish--pack light. Try to go with just 2 carry ons as you will probably going home with 2 boxes of fish--which is your max alowed for a check in. Other wise you will have to pay up to $75 for extra luggage.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: rubber boots like extra toughs are worn by everyone in town. If you are in town it will probably rain and if you are on a boat your feet will probably get wet...so wear rubber boots. It is not like you are going to Paris--LOL.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: you can get pretty much all you want in town
