If you're in Soldotna and want to get to Kenai or Nikiski the best way is to take the Kenai Spur Highway. The start of it is on mile 94.2 of the Sterling Highway just south of the Fred Meyer Mall. If you're there it's very easy to find. The Kenai Spur extends for 39 miles and goes all the way to the Captain Cook State Recreation Area. This is a great road to spot Moose on especially in the evenings. The van I was driving only spotted 2 small Moose on this road for our 6 days of being in Soldotna but one of our other vans had a big Mama Moose run right out in front of them and just barely missed hitting it.
There are many Charter Services to choose from in Soldotna. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the local rivers and not see anyone else in your stretch of the river. Rates vary on the type of service and distance you'll be traveling.
This is only a Joke as you can't really drive the salmon around. But everytime I see this photo it looks like Hadji is driving it so I thought I'd put it here. It's located at Hanson's Custom Carving at mile 90.1 of the Sterling Highway. You can read more about this place in my shopping tips as I'll do the write up there.
There are several places in Kenai or Anchorage to rent a car. Those two places would likely be your entry points to the area. As there isn't any major airport in Soldotna. If you don't have transportation it would be very difficult to get around. The area would also be quite nice for bicycling as it is quite flat.
This is a shot of the main drag of Soldotna. There are certain times of day that these roads are just packed with cars and trucks.
