Talkeetna Transportation

A really great air service in Talkeetna. Talkeetna Air Taxi provides scenic flights around Denali National Park, as well as glacier landings for climbing Mt. McKinley and other area mountains. Their staff was extreemly friendly and they work hard to make your plans work. In addition, they have a free bunk house for climbers returning from a climb or waiting for weather to fly to the start of their climb. Their pilots were extremely knowledgable and thorough.

Since most of Alaska is not accessible by car, float planes are a popular mode of transportation. Talkeetna is the starting point for many excursions to Denali. As a result, several air taxi businesses have set up shop here and spend their summers transporting tourists and climbers to and from the mountain.

As part of its twice-daily summer runs to Denali and Fairbanks, the Alaska Railroad stops in at Talkeetna on its constant journeys north. Out of season (i.e. the colder, snowbound months) the daily circuit is reduced to one run, but there are few better ways to see the Alaskan interior (though the railroad does not provide the same flexibility as a car).

With so little to see in the actual town, location is everything. A large variety of outfitters within town offer local flight tours and Denali packages. Glacier landings, scenic flights, "base camp" transport, photography flying, flightseeing and almost any custom-made trip is possible by services within town. Hudson Air Service (733-2321), Alaska Air Tours (733-2366, www.alaskaairtours.com), and K2aviation (733-2291, www.flyk2.com) are among several that provide experienced pilots and personal service for whatever adventure you can imagine.
