Norwegian Sun

by Zanzibargirl

I boarded a 7 Day Alaskan cruise through the inside passage, stopping at Ketchican, Juneau, Skagway and Wrangell. It was about 800 USpp for a cabin. That includes all buffet meals but no drinks. It was good. But I think it is suited for more older couples. Personally, I found it a bit constricting. Though lovely, I will next time catch the much cheaper ferries. If you are a young backpacker this is what I would suggest. I met plenty of other backpackers doing that. And it would have allowed more freedom, time and ability to move around at my own pace, at a much cheaper cost. Nevertheless, there are groups I would recommend a cruise to. If you love cruises and are looking for something more luxurious than the ferries, than this sort of thing is for you....

How Do You Move Trains through Snowdrifts?

by cruisingbug

If you head south on the Seward Highway out of Anchorage, you'll pass more than a few "oddities" along the road. This train was used to remove snow from along the railroad tracks so regular trains could make it through (although it doesn't really snow THAT much in Anchorage!). There's a little pulloff here so you can get out and poke around the train.

You Must Have The Milepost!

by ringleader

If you plan to vacation in Alaska on an unguided tour, you MUST HAVE THE MILEPOST! Even the locals use it!The Milepost is an indispensible resource as it gives you mile-by-mile descriptions of the scenic surroundings, what each small or large town has in tourist attractions or necessities: food, gas lodging, camping, fishing, sightseeing, road conditions along the highways and byways of Alaska, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, etc.It costs about $25.95 from www.themilepost.com.(We got ours in the Costco in Anchorage for about $12.)

Ferries

by goingsolo

The Alaska Marine Highway runs from Bellingham, Washington north through the Inside Passage. It is a lot cheaper than cruise travel and offers the option of departing the ferry at each town and getting off to explore.

Boats

by goingsolo

Cruise ships are popular along Alaska's inside passage located in southwestern Alaska. Cruise season is May through September. Most cruises stop at ports along the small towns along the inside passage- Ketchikan, Juneau and even Glacier Bay National Park. Some offer package tours which allow visitors time to visit southeast Alaska- the portion with roads which includes Anchorage, Denali National Park and the Kenai Peninsula.

Planes

by goingsolo

Most areas in Alaska are roadless, so residents and tourists rely on airplanes and floatplanes to visit many of the state's areas. There are many charter companies which will fly you to different regions, for a steep price. Still, this is the way to see most of Alaska.

"Welcome To Alaska" Via The Alaska Highwaty

by mcpangie

Leave the Yukon at Beaver Creek and this is the sign that you will see. Interestingly enough, I was leaving Alaska during this trip, not arriving. I'm going to try my hand in Nevada for awhile (not literally). Up until moving to Nevada, Alaska has been my home so I've had the opportunity to drive the Alaska Highway lots of different times. I've never gotten bored with the journey. But I must admit you have to enjoy driving; it's a long, long drive! If you enjoy your vehicle, and scenic byways, driving "North to Alaska" is worth the time and effort.

Ideal Alaskan Driving Vacation

by mcpangie

If you are driving around Alaska, and would like to see coastal communities as well, a good route to chose would be to drive to Portage and take the Alaska Railroad to Whittier. Once there catch the Alaska Marine Highway System to Valdez. Once in Valdez (beautiful, I lived there as a child for a year) you can explore the territory around there, including Kennicott as you drive up to Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. Make sure to see Chena Hot Springs while in Fairbanks. The return to Anchorage on the Parks Highway will bring you past Denali National Park I’d stop in Talkeetna and take a flight-seeing trip over Denali if you have the opportunity. That would be one of the ideal routes to see a lot of Alaska with very little back-tracking.

Stop & Smell the Flowers

by mcpangie

You're probably wondering why I have a picture of fireweed in the transportation section? It is just a reminder to stop and smell the flowers while you are in Alaska, both literally and figuratively. The Last Frontier offers many, many options for all kinds of travelers.Because fireweed lives up to it's name and spread like wildfire, you will find these flowers are most prolific alongside the highways were there is plenty of light and loose soil. I suppose someone really named fireweed due to shape... But, either way it's a lovely flower, very fragrant and delicious after honey bees get hold of it!

"Drive" the Alaska Marine Highway

by mcpangie

Catch an Alaska Marine Highway System ferry in Bellingham, Washington. Bellingham is currently the southernmost port (terminus) of the Alaska Marine Highway. Bellingham is a little over an hour north of Seattle on the I-5. This picture was taking while arriving in Bellingham. After you leave and start your journey north through Alaska's Inside Passage, you will pass Bella Bella, British Columbia and in about 36 hours you'll arrive in Ketchikan, Alaska - the first place that you should get off and stay awhile.
