Use Anchorage As Staging Point

by mcpangie

Anchorage is “south-centrally” located and typically the most common staging point for travelers who arrive by plane, or you can get off your Alaskan Cruise in Seward and continue by bus or train into Anchorage. If your plans to Alaska involve an Alaskan Cruise, Princess seems to offer the most all-encompassing packages for seeing more than Alaska’s coastal communities, just stick with them and they will bring you nice places. For instance, they have fabulous lodges and tour packages that will get you to destinations such as Denali National Park in comfort and style. [Note: I don't have any pictures from inside the park, I haven't taken that trip since before I owned a camera. That link will bring you to mrclay2000's pages, which are some of the best on VT.]If your plans include driving around Alaska, and I suggest that they should if you have the extra time and an adventuresome spirit,...

AMH (Alaska Marine Highway) - pastime

by mht_in_la

AMH, the public transportion system of Alaska, does not have casinos, dance clubs, or 24-hour buffet, so passengers have to find their own entertainment. Most people just read books or play cards. Some hang around outside deck searching for wildlife with their binocular. The energetic ones jug around the deck; circling AMH Kennicott 4 times makes a mile. When travelling in Inside Passage, I tried to identify the labyrinth of islands using the nautical charts provided on board. Sometimes there are USFS wildlife experts on board to educate passengers (not on my trip). AMH Kennicott also had a movie theater and a souvenir shop.Dining on the ferry was great. The food was decent and the atmosphere relaxed. You can either find a good seat and enjoy the fjord view, or meet up fellow travellers and chat. After meal, AMH Kennicott had a bar where I enjoyed my favorite Alaskan Amber.

AMH (Alaska Marine Highway) - car deck

by mht_in_la

Many people travel by car with their pets and everything. AMH takes them all. The photo shows the car deck on AMH Kennicott. It's so huge that it has no problem taking in a 20-wheel trailer. However, loading cars takes a lot longer than loading foot passengers, because the weight has to be distributed evenly and the unload strategy has to be thought through. When I boarded Kennicott at Auk Bay, we waited more than 2 hours for all cars to be loaded before departure.Once cars are loaded, car passengers go to upper deck and can longer attend their cars. Pets have to stay with the cars. Every 8 - 10 hours or so, car deck will be open for about 30 minutes for passengers to visit their cars, take care of their pets, or retrieve luggages if needed.

AMH (Alaska Marine Highway) - drill

by mht_in_la

No matter you travel by cruise or by ferry, you must exercise a drill by law. The photo shows the drill on AMH Kennicott. First the crew gathered all passengers and made sure everyone was counted for. Then they taught us some ocean survival skills. Everyone was given a lifesaver and lead to the orange lifeboats. These submarine-shaped lifeboats look big and solid. Each can accommodate perhaps 50 people. I felt safe because the ferry was less than one third filled to capacity so there's enough lifeboats for everyone.

Cruise Ships and Tour Boats

by mrclay2000

Cruise lines and other operators routinely ply the bays, inlets and fjords of Alaska's southern coasts and archipelagoes. Waters here are deep enough generally to allow even the largest cruise vessels to pierce the deepest inlets. Prices can be expensive, and cruise ships are notoriously cramped for space, but when the weather is good, the views from deck are often as fine as they come.

Bush Planes and Air Taxis

by mrclay2000

Small single-prop planes are common in Alaskan skies. For a stiff fee, pilots "ferry" their passengers to the remotest parts of the state for fishing, hunting and hiking, and return at some pre-determined date to pick you up. In the past 50 years, the bush pilots have made difficult landings a common practice, dropping off passengers on alpine lakes, glaciers, gravel bars and river beds.

take the ferry...its nicer than you think

by druvincent2112

The Alaska Marine Hwy System is a great alternative to a cruise ship. Bellingham, WA all the way to Skagway or vice versa, is The way to see the Inside passage. The cabins are clean and nice....the food is good .. and the staff is friendly and knowledgable..and professional. Wouldn't ya rather travel with real Alaskans instead of whiny, spoiled tourists?? Northern lights or the Midnight sun off the deck of one of the many mighty vessels and a swig of Jager??? Yeah baby.

small airplanes

by t7fox

Small airplanes, I hope you can travel in them if you are going to rural Alaska, They are safest way to travel. Even if you look on my page and see the metro liner better know as "the vomit comet" or the cherokee 6, it only seats 6 people. I can travel to Seattle cheaper than I can fly to rural Alaska.

Snow shoes for tromping about

by kaloz

A good way to get around in the fresh snow or on ice is to strap on some snow shoes. Snow shoes have gone high-tech with light weight frames, and built in crampons for traction, poles are optional but recommended.
