There are various places along the highway near Valdez where you can stop for a close look at the pipeline. It cost $8 billion to construct it, but we were told it paid for itself in just 18 months! The pipe is 48” in diameter and 1/2 “ thick. The pipeline is on a beam that can move, and it is elevated in places for animal crossings. A machine goes through the whole pipeline every 2 weeks to scrape the sides and check for problems. They call it a “pig” because it makes a squealing noise as it goes through.

There are some BEAUTIFUL waterfalls you can check out before you get to Valdez. There's Bridal Veil Falls, Horsetail Falls, and a few others that offer great photo opportunities!
