Great opportunity to take pictures of bears, eagles, dolphins, orcas, and such!
It is kind of expensive to eat there.
Little Switzerland of Alaska. Amazing 360 degree mountain view with waterfalls everywhere.
A number of companies offer cruises on the sound, and it is an activity you shouldn't miss. I went with Stan Stephens Cruises, and was totally satisfied with their tour. As we went out past the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Terminal, the boat captain told us a lot about the port and the tankers Sea lions lounged on the larger buoys, and we went past a...more
The Whitney Museum is wonderful. Maxine and Jesse Whitney had the largest collection of Alaskan native art and artifacts in the world, and it was given to the University of Alaska in 1998. The museum is located next to Prince William Sound Community College in Valdez. Displays show the history and culture of the native people, along with some...more
Day trip from Valdez to Columbia Glacier - unbelievably beautiful, kayak between icebergs, calm water, no experience needed. We went in August 2006. Our guide, the company owner, and another guide we met were all very friendly, knowledgeable, and really seem to enjoy what they do. Columbia Glacier is huge, so you will see it in the background, but...more
They have all kinds of things you can do here. There are several different kayaking trips you can go on that are 8 and 10 hours respectively. There is also some hiking thrown in with it. They you have other trips that are exclusively hiking. One is on top of icebergs. They offer other flyers for things like ice climbing. If you are a patron, they...more
We went in August 2006. Please see tip part 1 for more info and photos. Here is the basic schedule. We left Valdez on a boat trip out to an island, about 45 min. Then we kayaked towards the glacier. It was so interesting seeing it closer and closer. We saw some beautiful loons swimming very close to us. Depending on the tide times you would kayak...more

This may look like a little mom and pop fast food joint, but normally those are the best kept secrets. Oldtown burgers serves handmade patties with a variety of styles from classic to southwest. They even put their mini burgers on a hawaiian roll! They hand-cut the curly fries, which are nice and juicy, but you can always opt. for the straight edge...more
Mike's Palace offers mostly pizza and Italian foods, along with some surf and turf options. The waiting time for the food is normally over an hour. Never order for pick-up. Not only do they not even acknowledge you when you are trying to get their attention, but they say "fifteen more minutes" when you have already waited over an hour and a half....more
The Pipeline Club is the only place to dance in Valdez. Thursday nights in the Winter are off the hook. Friday nights are Karaoke/Dance night. The music isn't too bad either, some hip hop, top 40 and oldies (but goodies). Saturdays are live music. The band has been playing there for over 20 years (and their songs are that old too). If you like a...more
What nightlife?? In Valdez most people go the Pipeline club bar in the evening. However in the winter a great place to go is anywhere there are no street lights. Bundle up in warm clothing and watch the stars or the Northern lights. Probably the best show in town! Very casual. Jeans/T-shirts kind of town.more

After 2 days and 2 nights in Valdez, I took the AMH Bartlett to continue my journey to Whittier. The ride was about 7 hours, and the ticket was $65 in 2002. Bartlett is one of the smallest vessels among AMH fleet. Bartlett has no berth (room) because this is a relatively short ride. But it has a nice restaurant where you can dine on the deck with...more
Alaska Marine Highway (AMH) is a convenient and inexpensive way to travel around Alaska. It's sometimes called "poor men's cruise". To some remote coastal towns and cities, AMH is the only transportation to the outside.Consider visiting Valdez on AMH. Going east, Valdez has ferry service to Cordova (several times a week) and all the way to Inside...more
I noticed this wholesale Chain all across Alaska.. They have just about everything in Bulk.. Even Fishing poles.. But if you need food or groceries the place is great .. They have everything. We stopped and picked up a few things in Valdez and Seward.. The cashier in Seward was very helpful.. Normal pricing for groceries except many things are in...more
anywheregood god. lettuce by the pound? and bananas at 4 times the price i'm used to paying. LOL expect to spend a lot of money for everything. Prices are super high compared to most places due to high transportation costs. On the plus side is that the grocery store definitely has the best quality fruits and vegetables at those prices..more
if you wanna how dangerous it would be, get a knife and force your capten sail the boat closely to the glacia...
mmmm...they look to tasty and fresh and juicy and sweet and berry like. Oooh, I wonder if they taste more like raspberries or boysenberries. ...it's neither. I'd compare them to a cross between gooseberries and rhubarb. heh. Try a few then leave the rest on the branches along with the spiderwebs, maggot like worms, and catapillars. Oh, and i've...more
The deck set up to view salmon spawning just before town is all phoney. The fish are brought there from Solomon Gultch Hatchery to be implanted at that spot and so return later as adults. The "stream" leading to the "spawning" area was dug out with machinery. It's still a nice little information center but it is not natural. Stop by to read, learn...more

There are various places along the highway near Valdez where you can stop for a close look at the pipeline. It cost $8 billion to construct it, but we were told it paid for itself in just 18 months! The pipe is 48” in diameter and 1/2 “ thick. The pipeline is on a beam that can move, and it is elevated in places for animal crossings. A machine goes...more
You will be happy you packed extra ziplock bags if you go to Valdez. They will keep your cameras, extra batteries, film, notes, etc, dry when you catch the big one! Ziplock bags, vaccuum sealed bags, or any waterproof bags can also be purchased at the Eagle Claw store if you forget to bring them to town with you!.more
You will increase your chances of catching big fish or many fish if you actually go out far on a charter boat. Best chance to catch Halibut. You can also find Salmon, Linkcod or such. If you're really lucky, you can catch something extremely rare and scary looking like a WOLF EEL. I caught one and found out that in sport fishing, the local Valdez...more
Great Halibut fishing with Swifty's B&B Guide Service. Senior Capt Brandon took us out over memorial weekend for Halibut and we limited out as fast as we could pull them in the boat. Wonderful experience. The scenery on the way out is exceptional and the sea life is amazing. While on the water a large group of atleast 50 killer whales passed within...more
In the winter we get a ton of snow! It's my first winter here and it's been a mild one by valdez standards. In the winter expect an average of 30 feet of snow. It's great for all of those outdoor activities like snowmobile races and skiing. We had a huge snowstorm over New Years. I read somewhere that we got 8 feet of snow that week, and the...more
