El Conquistador: Great decor and Ambience; Average Food

El Conquistador is part of the Hotel Gadsden and boasts impressive old world architecture and design. There is a very nice tile mural on one wall. The decor and ambience makes you expect a great dining experience. The menu is varied including steak, chicken, ribs, and a variety of seafood including many types of fish, shrimp, and lobster. The service is excellent. Unfortunately, the food was kind of average. I did like their grilled Tilapia pretty well but I expected better. You might want to just look around or order coffee here and eat elsewhere.

The Grilled Tilapia was a little above average.

The Grand Cafe: The best in town
  • Satisfaction:
  • While the general decor/ambience of this clean and recently redecorated restaurant leaves something to be desired, it's not fancy or "mexican themed", the collection of Maryln Monroe photographs and memoribilia on the walls is quite a sight. But the FOOD is the best authentic Mexican in town and the Service is always friendly. Open daily except Sunday for lunch and dinner it can be very busy at lunch time between 1215 &1PM with a consequent slow down in service. Arrive early at 11AM or later at 1PM and settle in for a leasurely meal. I recommend either the "Mexican Flag Combo" (my favorite) or the "Grand Combo" for a nice sample of three different entre items. No liquor, cervesa (beer) & vino only.

"Flag Combo" Refried beans and tortillias made with canola oil vs. lard, delicious and heart healthy. One each; Green corn tomale, Cheese enchilada with a mild green sauce, and enchilada with a tangy but not scorching red sauce on a bed of shredded lettuce. All salsas are made fresh in house. Serving is ample for a big eater but if you want more order the "Grand Combo" which adds a generous serving of spanish riceto the above.

The Grand Cafe: Say Hello to Marilyn
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Grand Cafe serves Mexican and American Food. They have daily specials. There is a nice marble topped bar. They serve beer and wine. The music they played was Mexican and most of the clientele the day I was there spoke Spanish. The service was good. Many people come here for the over 200 photographs and other displays about Marilyn Monroe. It all started years ago when the owner put up a couple of photos. Friends and customers started sending her more photos and other items and the collection grew to the pont that it dominates the restaurant. Hours are 11 AM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday; 11 AM to 9 PM on Friday and 12 PM to 9 PM on Saturday. They are closed on Sunday.

I was not hungry and just stopped for a Sprite. A big glass for 1.09.

    Yogi's: Fun bright family environment
  • Satisfaction:
  • The place is usually pretty full and the waitresses are slow to serve, but expect it and relax. Have a lemonade and eat some chips and watch all the families enjoying their time together. I love their carne asada and some of the soups, but beware of the mass quantities of cheese in them. Also, their chimichangas are big enough for a MANLY man. If you feel like splitting, there is a dish that is popular in this area that is basically a buffet platter for two or more of beef, chicken, veggies, tortillas, beans, rice, ...... it is very large here and looks very fresh and delicious. Someday when I'm extra hungry.

I love the carne asada- chargrilled marinated steak tacos with shredded cabbage and lime. Maybe order a side of guac (it's a good buy) and you will be in heaven.

el Vaquero: Chips are delicious, and the salsa is HOT
  • Satisfaction:
  • It is the first Mexican Steakhouse I've been to, so I can't compare. Expect the type of "healthy" choices you would have at any steakhouse. The chips and salsa are homemade and I can't stop eating them even though it means I leave completely stuffed. I liked their burgers and the waitstaff is very sweet.

See above. Wait to eat until about 7:30, people seem to come in later and it is interesting to people watch.

  • Directions: Douglas is a grid. You will come in on about G and 15th, so If you head South a few blocks and East a few, you will find it. A street is a main drag. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but they are very friendly. Bring your appetite.
