  • You are close to Navajo and Hopi country here, but be warned if traveling to reservations -- they have their own law, and you don't want to cross them. The reservations are 'dry' so do NOT take alcohol. I haven't run into trouble with them, but I understand if you get pulled over or stopped by 'rez' police, you will have to bribe your way out of it. Having said that, you can get great deals on native crafts if you avoid tourist shops and buy directly from the craftsman -- you can find them sitting out in some of the parks and on the Mesas on the Hopi reservation. (BTW, if they are selling burrito type food, be aware it's probably SPAM inside it. Ick.) DO NOT try to take pictures if you go up the mesas on the hopi res. BIG faux pas. HUGE. Absolutely forbidden. And also make sure you lock cars on the res, like anywhere else, but especially there. Don't leave valuables in them. Period. When you cross that res line, realize you are entering a third world country. Watch for animals in the road -- they do not have fences like we do. Also make sure you have a full gas tank -- stations a re few, far between and EXPENSIVE! Take water in case of a breakdown. I spent some time at Canyon De Chelly, east of Flagstaff and in the heart of Navajo country. Beautiful hike into the canyon and ruins at the bottom.

  • Be kind and considerate to all -- especially the Native Culture (NAVAJO & HOPI TRIBES). You'll be one over 5 MILLION travellers passing thru this year so you'll encounter many cultures.

Museum of Northern Arizona is really one of the best museums to visit in the state. Don't forget to look outside the museum the Spanish sculpture with a horse and a conqueror. Also you can do a little Trail seeing several interesting flowers and plants.

    Patios

  • If you are in Flagstaff, and it is even a little bit warm outside, your best bet is to go downtown and walk around until you find a place with a patio, then sit and enjoy a couple beers. This is where you'll rub shoulders with locals, and probably have the best time. Overall people are really interested in talking to you, especially if you're travelling. Don't be surprised if the entire afternoon slips away and you're still in the same spot.

Flagstaff is an extremely "dog friendly" town!! You will see people walking their dogs downtown, dogs sitting out on the patios with their owners, dogs off the leash in most or all of the wide open spaces in and around Flagstaff, and of course dogs in the park, and "dog parks" aka bark parks of which we have two.
