N. Arizona Museum and Book Shop: Great Museum Shops
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Museum of Northern Arizona had two excellent shops to wander through!

The Museum Shop had an extensive selection of silver jewelry. Stunning sterling silver pieces and a wide assortment of torquoise bracelets, earrings or necklaces and rings filled the glass cases. I was able to find a tri-colored stone pendant to add to my silver necklace (picture 2). The earrings turned up later at another gift shop.

There were also Navajo rugs, pottery, sculpture, katsina dolls, fetish carvings and one-of-a-kind treasures. Artwork by known and emerging artists was also available.

The Bookstore specialized in subjects relating to Arizona, the Colorado Plateau and other topics such as zoology. We selected a book on the Grand Canyon. Prints of art pieces, educational games for kids, music CD's and clothing.

We mailed our book home because it was quite heavy. It arrived in perfect condition!

Hours are daily from 9am-5pm. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Painted Desert: For Authentic Native Art
  • Tip Rating:
  • As we familiarized ourselves with historic Flagstaff, we came upon the Painted Desert Trading Company, which carried quite a bit of Native American crafts and Southwest style gifts (picture 2).

My husband recently decided to begin collecting pottery, so he had his eye on a black on black decorative piece. After a walk around the shop, he also added two additional pieces of Southwest pottery to his pile.

I had chosen a malachite and silver bracelet for myself (picture 3) and a verdegris wind chime for our daughter to hang on her porch. There were so many beautiful things to chose from--it was good we didn't linger too long.

We didn't want to have to transport our treasures, so arranged to have them mailed out. They arrived expertly packed with no problems with shipping!

Bookmans: Used book and music bonanza!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bookman's is a fantastic place to find a wide variety of used books, magazines, CDs, videos, etc. The prices are great, the selection is great and the quality is great! It's also a good bet when looking to sell your own used media.

Vistor Center Gift Shop: Flagstaff Souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • This visitor center is very unique since it is located in the historic train station, it also has some unique Route 66 gifts, Flagstaff souvenirs a many other types of gifts and books.

Built in 1926 to replace the original railroad depot, it still serves the community as an Amtrak train station and a Visitor Center. I can never say enough about visitor centers and what a wonderful gem they are for travelers and tourist alike. Free local and state maps as well as other destination brochures are available. Let us not forget the knowledgeable staff who can always point you in the right direction of many local attractions.

All shops in the area: Flagstaff shopping
Flag has a lot of very cool and cheap thrift stores, so that is my first tip. Second, there are som cool cowboywear stores, where you can get everything a cowgirl/boy can need; everything from boots (of course) to spur-jewellery via fun tshirts and beautiful western-skirts.

As for the Historic downtown area; there are mainly outdoors wear stores which are pretty good. But the rest is more or less wierd newage clothing, so it depends on your prefernces if you wish to shop there ;-). Of course there is also a lot of stores where you can buy jewellery made by native Americans; in this case mostly the local Hopi and Navajo crafts.

Personally, I also got a lot of stuff from Target. They have everything and some of it is pretty cool.

There is a mall 10 minutes drive to the west; it's allright, but if you need fancy stuff you'd better go down to Phoenix for a little shopping-spree. (It's only 2 hours away)

It is not cheap, but won't ruin you either. The 2nd hand stores are of course cheap.

    Babbits Sporting Goods: Babbits
This shop is where you go to get all your nice, brand-name, expensive gear. They carry all the really great brands, but at a price of course.
My advise would be to try the other places first and if you absolutely can't find what you want then go to Babbits....if you make it your first stop I guarentee you'll end up spending a pretty penny!

If you can afford it, buy everything!!!!

    A lot

    Basement Shops: Basement Shops
There is an old sort of mall right downtown on Leroux which has been converted into a series of really cute botique shops.
Downstairs is a super cute shop with a lot of different clothes for both men and women, as well as various housewares and decor.

It's all marked wayyyyy up. I only shop there if I want something cute and different.

    Blackhound Gallery: Blackhound
Blackhound started as a print shop which also did framing. They sold a few odd trinkets which really began catching on. The shop has evolved into this really cool, weird boutique with funny trinkets, and great clothes. They still sell prints and do framing as well.

Some of my personal favorites.... The chicken chucker, a gun which shoots miniature rubber chickens; George W. Bush Toilet Paper, Jesus action figures, magnets with lewd and inappropriate slogans, Pabst Blue Ribbon Screen T's...the list goes on and on. You get the picture.

    Again, big mark up.

Flagstaff Mall: A Place to Shop or Sit
Flagstaff Mall is quaint, but not small. It is the only shopping mall in the region and is quite popular amongst locals.
I don't typically like malls, but I like this one. Mostly due to the fireplace they have in the common area on the west side of the mall, surrounded by couches and chairs for those cold winter days.

Sears, Dilliard's and JC Penney are anchors. Many typical mall shops and a food court exist also.

The state, county and city all have sales taxes that are applicable at the mall. Non-residents of Arizona qualify for a refund on taxes but, unfortunately, this is somewhat hard to get and not worth it unless you're getting quite a bit of money back.

    Flagstaff Mall: Flagstaff Mall
Our mall is nothing to brag about, so don't plan on doing any of the shopping you would associate with other AZ places like Scottsdale. We have a Gap and that's about as good as it gets!
