Even if you aren't in the mood for buying, you must stop at the historic Cameron Trading Post at least for a break on that long drive to the Grand Canyon (the east entrance is much more scenic)

The main shop has thousands of items ranging from authentic native jewellrey and pottery to Grand Canyon pot holders. It is a bit of a tourist trap, but fun.

Don't miss out on the other shop that has authentic native antiques, such as navajo rugs and baskets, and other unique artifacts. Sure, you probably won't drop $10,000 on a beautiful vintage Navajo rug, but it's sure fun to look. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions.

Native jewellery and pottery, plus Hopi Kachinas. Navajo rugs if you have deep pockets! If you want to buy native jewellery, you may want to buy here, as I found a majority of the authentic native jewellery at the Grand Canyon overpriced.

My husband purchased a Navajo torquoise and silver bracelet for me. We found they are willing to bargain on jewellery, so don't be afraid to ask if that is the best price they can give you.

    Verkamp's Curios: Verkamp's Curios
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many little shops at the Grand Canyon if you want to pick up some souveniers, but I found the best and most tasteful selection was at Hopi House ( see Things to Do tips) and at Verkamp's. Verkamp's is the oldest gift shop on the rim, being built in 1906. The historic building served as a shop and as the family residence well into the mid 80's.

As with Hopi House, the souveniers run from very affordable to tres expensive. There is something for everyone's budget.

Don't miss the meteorite on display in the store. It looks and feels like a big chunk of cast iron.

Everything from postcards, to stuffed animals, to native made jewellery, pottery, and crafts. If you want a good and packable gift idea, I picked up some very reasonably priced DVD's about the Grand Canyon for friends and relatives.

You may want to look at the Cameron Trading Post's jewellery, (next tip) as there is more selection and better prices, plus they will bargain with you.

    Distinctive Pottery at The
    Watchtower

The lovely vistas of Desert View Drive culminated at The Watchtower, a historic construction designed by architect, Mary Colter. This is one of six remaining buildings designed by her at the Grand Canyon.

The Watchtower gift shop was brimming with high quality Native American crafts such as distinctive pottery, handcrafted wood flutes, handcrafted silver jewelry, polished wood carvings, wood crafts symbolic of the Indian culture and many other items.

Typical souvenirs such as post cards, small toys, clothing with the Grand Canyon logo emblazoned upon them, books and other memorabilia could be found here, as well.

Be sure to wind your way to the top of The Watchtower for stunning views of the canyon. Note the Native American style artwork throughout the structure. Hours are 8am-6pm daily; from May 17: 8 am-sunset.

Verkamp's Curios: Shopping at Grand Canyon Village
  • Tip Rating:
  • Since Grand Canyon Village seemed to be a central hub for those enjoying the sights of the Grand Canyon, we expected to have some difficulty finding a parking spot, but we found a space behind Verkamp's Curios. Verkamp's has been in business for over 100 years.

There are a number of gift/souvenir shops throughout the Grand Canyon, but it's hard to pass them by when still needing a special souvenir or two to take back home with you. Verkamp's had a great selection of good quality gifts, such as: silver jewelry, sandpaintings, baskets, woven rugs, fetishes, Katsina dolls and the less expensive souvenirs.

The shop is very convenient to those lodging at El Tovar or Bright Angel Lodge, although these hotels had their own gift shops, too.

Stop by after you walk the RIM TRAIL or hop off the Hermit Road Shuttle--you'll surely find something to hold your interest! Spring hours are 9am-6:30 p.m.

The Desert View Shops--Near the Watchtower: More Grand Canyon souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • A number of small shops collect conveniently near The Watchtower site and extend beyond the gift shop located there. You can find just about anything here!

Perhaps at this point in your travel, you might want a snack/beverage or a post card or two. You've come to the right place!

Beyond the historic Watchtower but within the same area, you'll find:

    A bookstore/park information center (hours are 9am-5pm)-- picture 2

The Trading Post gift shop and snack bar with limited inside seating plus outdoor picnic tables--opening photo (8am-sunset)

Desertview Marketplace-a general store which sells snacks, grocery items, magazines, clothing and camp supplies--pictures 3-4 (hours 8am-sunset)

Chevron service station (hours 9 am-7pm) payment with credit card. Large RV's, etc. can be accommodated here

FYI:The Desert View Campground is located nearby is open from mid-May to the end of October. There are no hook-ups but it does have drinking water. No reservations are taken beforehand.

Whatever you need is most likely within these stores

Inside the the state park you will find excellent Indain crafts in the museum to purchase or to just view. It has a post office there also to mail some postcard back home

Cameron Trading Post: Lots of products to buy!
I bought some Indian pottery from the Cameron Trading Post. I had stopped at 6 or 7 other locations to find what I was looking for. (road stand vendors)

This place has a ton of different and unique products to buy. No wonder there were all kinds of tourist buses there!

Indian made products and about everything else you could imagine!

Slightly more than other locations but the selection will blow you away!

If you want a poster or book, go to the shops at the Grand Canyon.

Depending on which store you go to, you can buy food, film, posters, books or about anything you may need.
