Sunset at the Grand Canyon by JanPeter74 Make sure you can experience a sunset here at the Grand Canyon. A visit during the day is OK, but the true beauty of the Canyon is displayed when the sun is setting and provides long shadows and warm colours that change every minute. Don’t make the mistake I saw some people make and do not arrive just a few minutes before sunset. It is the low sun that makes it all spectacular (from +/- 30 to 10 minutes before sunset), not the exact moment the sun disappears. Leave a Comment

The morning sun at the Grand Canyon by AKtravelers As difficult as it may be, it's worth the effort to raise your weary bones and catch a Sunrise at the Grand Canyon. The best vantage poiints are those that face east, such as Yavaupi Point, where you can see the sky gradually brighten and then the sun peak over the horizon. Then, as the air warms and the sun ascends, it gradually illuminates the previously-hidden features of the Canyon below. You may be cold watching this -- even in summer the desert air can be chilly -- but you will never forget the experience. Leave a Comment

Hopi Point is about 7000 feet over sea level. This is for many the best place to watch the sunset. For one reaso, at Hopi Point you get a great view of both rims, south and west. Hopi Point is also where the free red bus shuttle has a return bus stop, and restrooms, very important for you to know. Directions: At the village route transfer take red free shuttle to Hopi Point when Hermit Road is closed to private traffic. Otherwise drive up to Hopi Point, about 2.5 miles west of Bright Angel Lodge.Website: www.nps.gov/grca

Sun touching the tops of the rocks as it rises by grandmaR We went out in the pitch dark to see the Canyon at sunrise. It is awesome to see the sun first touch the tops of the rocks, and gradually travel down into the Canyon. In the summer, do most of your landscapes early in the morning or late in the evening. Otherwise, all the nooks and crannies will tend to blend into each other and you won't get any sense of the depth. During the day, concentrate more on closer-up details. In spite of all you do, photographs won't capture but a fraction of the experience. Leave a Comment

*yawn* - this was (obviously) a very early morning, but so worth it. Dare I say the best sunrise I've ever seen?? We did a little (off road) rock climb to get out on a limb - naughty! But it managed to get us away from the many people gathering on the recommended ledge. Obviously be careful if you are doing this, there are plenty of horror stories about falling into the canyon. Despite this I think you'll agree that these photos are priceless. Leave a Comment

by Alien When you are on the South Rim, you can choose from several viewing points. Each gives a breathtaking sight on the red-brown-green-blue rocks. The best times are sunrise and sunset. Rain and cloudy skies can be disappointing, but wait for a while... of course you don't plan to just spend a few hours here, do you? The colors and the silence are amazing. One can really find the peace of mind on a ledge, staring somewhere far....

Make sure to find yourself a posy on the rim to watch the sunset. We joined the crowds at one viewing points. The sunset was pretty ordinary but we were in for a treat with a spectacular sunrise. The crowds had all but disappeared at sunrise as well. It was easy enough to find a piece of solitude along the rim. Leave a Comment

Use the Park bus --blue route-- to see sunset at Pima Point (prettier than Hermit's Rest). The sun's rays highlight the canyon stone's red mineral stripes. Leave a Comment Directions: western side of South Rim
