Take a Ride Over the Canyon!

    A Papillon Helicopter

Outside the Grand Canyon National Park and only a few miles from the Rim is the small community of Tusayan and the Grand Canyon Airport. We had noticed that the Papillon ('butterfly' in French) Helicopter Co. had a very nice looking tour centre there for flights over the Grand Canyon. Realizing that we probably would never be back to this area again, we decided to fork out US$115 each for their first ride of the morning at 9 AM. We did this without any advance planning but had no difficulty getting a couple of seats. When you purchase your tickets, you are weighed on a scale in the floor so they can determine the seat allocations for proper weight distribution in the helicopter. We ended up sharing our helicopter with a family from France and my wife was lucky enough to sit up front with the pilot! Since this was her first helicopter ride that was an extra bonus! During the half-hour flight, headsets provide a narrative of the Canyon and what we were seeing (this is available in 9 languages so our French companions were OK). The views from the chopper were spectacular and we were well satisfied as we finally drove away on our way south again.

In the airplane we were above The Grand Canyon for 40 minutes where as the helicopter only flies over it for 15 minutes. Besides that the airplane flight cost $75.- and the helicopter flight $99.-. In our opinion not a difficult decision to make.

The airplane was quite small and there was room for 19 people, but it guaranteed a perfect view for all, which was true! We flew over 100 miles of the grandest scenery the Grand Canyon has to offer.

The route we took flying of the Grand Canyon.

Once we left Grand Canyon Airport it took about 5 minutes to reach The Grand Canyon rim. On reaching the Canyon's rim, the mighty Colorado River immediately came in to view as we reached our cruising altitude.

From the moment we were able to see The Grand Canyon till the moment we returned it was an unbelievable experience. Descriptions of the geology and history of the Canyon are carried over the headphones in six languages as the aircraft passes the layers and formations that make the Grand Canyon.

By plane - The fastest way to explore Grand Canyon

Amazing views into the depth of the Grand Canyon.

The fastest way to explore The Grand Canyon is by plane. Before we left The Netherlands we heared of a helicopter flight over The Grand Canyon and we were determined to experience that. Once we were in America we were brought to The Grand Canyon Airlines. They fly air tours since 1927 and even flew over the Grand Canyon before it became a National Park. At the desk we were shown that an airplane flight would give us more value for (our) money than a helicopter flight.

Maybe it was the thrill of our life. We think that perhaps no landscape on earth is as startling to observe as the vast yet intricate face of The Grand Canyon.

We flew over the entire canyon made a lot of pictures and it was really breathtaking. Like we said; maybe the thrill of our life!

By plane - Of course we had to pay!

The bill of our plane flight.

Yes, yes, we know. After we recommend you all to take the plane flight instead of the helicopter flight ... we of course had to pay the bill! LOL

A credit card helps of course. But anyway. We like to travel and that costs money. We do have some kind of a budget, but whenever we undertake the journey we just want to do what we want to do. Once we´re back home we´ll see the financial damage. But we don´t want any regrets that we didn´t do domething we (afterwards) surely wanted to de.

    Check out the bill!

    Aerial view of the Canyon

Grand Canyon airlines operates flights from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon airport, in the south end of Tusayan. Many flights also include an aerial flyover of the canyon.
