Mexico From Joe's Canyon Trail 3 more images

The Coronado National Monument is located in Southeast Arizona along the Mexican Border. It consists of 4750 Acres of Oak Woodland and mountainous terrain. It is through this area that Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his expedition traveled in their search for the fabled "seven cities of Cibola" from 1540 to 1542. The national monument has a visitor's center with a small museum/gift shop, a short trail with exhibits, the Coronado Cave Trail (3/4 mile each way with a steep and rocky climb; bring a flashlight and sturdy waking shoes), Joe's Canyon Trail leading to Montezuma Pass Overlook (3.1 miles each way; great views of Arizona and Mexico. joins up with the Montezuma Pass Parking Area), Yaqui Ridge Trail (a 1 mile detour off Joe's Canyon Trail with a steep descent) leading to the Mexican Border and representing the start of the Arizona Trail a trail leading from Mexico to Utah (not complete yet), and a the Coronado Peak Trail a short detour from Joe's Canyon Trail leading to the top of Coronado Peak offering historical information along the way. Joe's Canyon Trail rises 1300 feet in the first mile and is not easy. Bring water and protection from the sun.

Lone Star Cafe 1 more image

The Lone Star Cafe offers breakfast and lunch and is open from 6 AM to 2 PM daily. Decor tends toward Southwestern with animal skulls, spurs, and western style paintings. Food is typical breakfast fare, sandwiches, soups, chili, fried chicken and fried cod. Other than the "Veggie Omelet" there is nothing heart friendly on the menu. The fair was okay; but the portions were a little small. $7.50 for fried cod with some French fries and a very small portion of Cole slaw. The waitress/hostess was very friendly. I was the only customer she did not know by name.

Favorite Dish: The fried cod was okay; but the portions were kind of small.

    Mesquite Tree Restaurant

The Mesquite Tree Restaurant is located about 7 miles outside of Sierra Vista in a little area known as Hereford. The Mesquite Tree is very popular with folks from all over the area and is known for the large Mesquite Tree located on the large patio of the restaurant.

The steaks are good and the ribs are good. They do serve seafood and chicken as well.

They have a fully stocked bar but I find their drinks are a little weak.

Try to call ahead if you can as they get very busy on Friday and Saturday night. Also see if you can sit in the patio area in the summer as it is real nice out there under the big Mesquite Tree.

    Hours of Operation:
Open Tuesday to Sunday at 5 PM
They stop seating Sunday at 8 PM, Tuesday to Saturday at 9 PM
    Closed Mondays

Favorite Dish: I like the NY strip steak here and the shrimp cocktail is very good. Veggies do not come with the meal so you need to order them as extras if you want them.
