The major tourist attraction (besides the golf course) in Lake Montezuma is Montezuma's Well. It is a National Park Monument, a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument (see below). The Well is indeed a huge sink hole. Native Americans of the Sinaugua tribe dwelt in it in the 1600s, and you can hike down the short trail to view the ruins closer. You might enjoy picnicing near the well, at a well maintained small picnic ground. More information is available at the Desert USA website.
Down I-17 about 10 miles toward Phoenix, the National Monument, Montezuma Castle is the large canyon ruins of the Sinaguas. More information is available at the above site.
After visiting and visualizing ancient history, you can stop at the Cliff Castle Casino on the Yavapai-Apache Nation Reservation.
Northwest of Lake Montezuma is beautiful Oak Creek Canyon, and further north is the Grand Canyon. Sedona is a beautiful town build in the red rocks of Oak Creek Canyon. Be sure to spend some time in beautiful
Tlaquepaque which offers an exceptional collection of Sedona galleries, shops and fine restaurants. Tlaquepaque is itself a wondrous work of art.
Want to ride in a hot air balloon over the beautiful red rock area? There are balloon companies who can provide that wonderful unique experience.
