Favorite thing: Well from what I got from the guide, Biosphere 1 is our very own EARTH...this Biosphere 2 was constructed between 1987-1991 in conjunction with University of Arizona.
Biosphere 2 is a 3.15-acre (12,700 m2) structure originally built to be a man-made, materially-closed ecological system in Oracle, Arizona by Space Biosphere Ventures - a project costing somewhere over 200 million dollars...
It was used to explore the complex web of interactions within life systems in a structure that included five areas based on natural biomes and an agricultural area and human living/working space to study the interactions between humans, farming and technologies with the rest of nature. So, inside you do see the Amazon Raining Forest, the mangroves of Florida and then even the desert (which was already outside the complex anyways).
But before this place used to be airtight and there people shutr in for months in the eraly 1990's (1994 being the latest) - but now the complex is exposed to air.
Biospehere scientists explored the possible use of closed biospheres in space colonization, and allowed the study and manipulation of a biosphere without harming Earth's.
Funding for the project came primarily from the joint venture’s financial partner, Edward Bass' Decisions Investment, and cost $200 million from 1985 to 2007.

Biosphere 2 Centre, Oracle
Biosphere 2 was privately constructed in the late 1980s to discover if eight people could sustain themselves in a sealed, energy-rich environment. The first two-year mission began in September 1991 and was followed by a second, shorter mission in 1993-1994.
Following these experiments, the owners of Biosphere 2 decided to change its mission and asked scientists at Columbia University to advise them as to what might be done. This advisory role led to an acceptance by Columbia, in 1996, of full responsibility for the conduct of research, education and public outreach activities on the site. The current management agreement with Columbia University extends through 2010.
The location of the Center is:
