There were lots of humming birds hovering among the cacti. The noise they make is amazing in the quiet heat of the desert.

I never imagined that the desert would have so much vegetation, I had always thought it was just sand and fat cacti, how wrong I was!!

"Like a Zoo, Only Better!"
The Living Desert was a great day trip, perfect for all the family! We visited during Easter weekend, when there was an open day called "Mother Nature's Earth Jam" with lots of additional activities for children (and adults!). Many local businesses and community projects had exhibits and give-away items, one of which was an ornamental chilli plant seeding - mine is still alive and well, a happy reminder of a great day!
It was established in 1970 as a non-profit education and conservation center. There are 1200 acres of desert to wander through, ranging from dry arrid desert, to humid lush oasis, and everything inbetween! There are many desert animals to admire, including bobcats, mountain lions, golden eagles and giraffes.
You can either stick close to the visitors center, which has a trail around the most popular exhibits and took us around three hours to wander around, or you can walk further on the hiking trails off the beaten path.
