A photo-stop in the Painted Desert

The only way to visit the Petrified Forest is to drive here, so you’ll need a car unless you can find a touring holiday which includes this on the itinerary. The road through the park is 27 miles long and is best driven once either from south to north, starting on Route 180, or north to south, starting on Hwy 40 (exit 311). Unless you want to retrace your steps at any point you will have to drive the full length through both the Petrified Forest section between these two roads and the Painted Desert to the north of Hwy 40, as it isn’t possible to exit to the main road at the point where the park road crosses it – have a look at the map here to see what I mean.

Depending on your route, the park is 215 or 259 miles from Phoenix (the longer distance is by Interstate, so could be quicker). Once in the park, take your time, observe the speed limits, and take advantage of all the pullouts to get a good look at the scenery. And do get out of the car – there are several short and fairly easy trails that will take you much closer to the logs and give you a better sense of this amazing landscape.

    Petrified Forest in Holbrook, Arizona

We began our trip into the Petrified National Forest from Holbrook by heading east on I-40 for 23 miles. We exited at milepost 311, which took us directly to the Visitor Center, Museum and entrance.

There are several lookout points, and from this north entrance, you will travel through the Painted Desert first and then into the heart of the Petrified Forest.

The road through the park is about 28 miles long, and it takes about 45-60 minutes to drive through (stopping very minimally).

The south exit of the park connects to Highway 80, and you can turn west on 180 and travel 19 miles back to Holbrook.
