Get out! Of the city and explore!

    by AVG2319 Updated Oct 16, 2009

While Phoenix is fun to explore, if you're in Arizona you really need to jump in the car and drive out to some other spots the state has to offer-
Camp Verde if you want to see Montezuma's Castle, Jerome to the old mining town and great views, Sedona for the red rocks and awesome hiking, Flagstaff for the fall colors or skiing, Tucson for Saguaro National Park, Catalinas, the Grand Canyon, Payson for Tonto Falls there is so much nature wants to show you.

Just get in the car and drive- Arizona has a lot of places to explore!

    Day trip to Sedona

by SLLiew Updated Feb 25, 2008

It was a scenic 110 miles drive to Sedona from Phoenix in Arizona.

Surrounded by red colored sandstone cliffs and hills, Sedona is a great nature getaway.

If you are a fan of the cartoon "Peanuts", look out for the rock formations resembling "Snoopy" lying on the dog house with the ever present "Lucy"

There are spas, golf resorts, art galleries and souvenir shopping. It is a place where the photos do not do justice. There is like a panaromic view of the red rocks in the horizon.

Great place to revitalize the spirits.

Drive north through the Sonaran desert

Drive north on Hwy 17 towards Flagstaff via Sedona. You'll find the Bradshaw mounatins, the lovely Verde valley, but before all that, the Sonaran desert is lovely in the morning light. There are many kinds of cacti - some are prickly pear (which a candy, or jam is made from its purple fruit), some are other kinds, but the most famous is the saguaro (pronounced sew-wear-o). These are the huge cacti with the arms. They are normally 100 years old before they grow arms. Some of them along the highway looked pretty sick though.

Apparently saguaros only grow in the Sonaran desert in southern and south-central Arizona and northern Mexico. They don't grow anywhere else in the world. Also this is the greenest desert in the world. Although it lacks water, this desert has plant life, many others don't have much other than scrub brush. And when it rains (sometimes all at once during Arizona monsoon thunderstorms) what does stay in the ground nourishes the flora.

    full moon, sedona

Sedona is a popular day trip for those visiting Phoenix. A little more than a hour North, it is worth the trip to visit Acipaki (SP?) a little touristy mall like encampment. There is a small cafe that serves excellent sandwiches and a couple of shops that are somewhat overpriced but do carry jewelry and crafts made by artisans, not factories. After you tire of the mall, just take a slow drive around Sedona and do not miss the sunset. On this trip, we just happened to catch a full moon.

    GO beyond Arizona into UTAH

AS you go North from Phoenix into North Arizona and eventually Utah, the landscape gets more and more fantastic. So why not plan a week a way, maybe starting in Sedona, on to the Grand Canyon, FLagstaff, Lake Powell, Bryce CAnyon, Zion national park, gold reef national park, Arches and Canyonlands coming back through monument valley. YOu will not be bored by the views.

You must make the time to go to Sedona! Sedona is the most peaceful, relaxing, and soothing, yet stimulating places on earth! And they have the best jewelry. If you love silver, and you love beauty of the land... GO!
