Don't be daunted by the locals and their customs, you will miss all the fun and too many dollars. Places outside downtown are served by buses, lots of them...
In my case I was staying in Baseline Road near Arizona Mills and instead of spending a $15 taxi ride to downtown Tempe I took the $1.25 ride on the 56 bus (if I remember it correctly...) Just remember to get back on the same one... but in opposite direction...
Unique Suggestions:
Ask the concierge of your hotel to point to you where the bus stops are.
40 miles outside Flagstaff is Meteor Crater. IT is a huge hole where a meteor hit earth. It is quite an impressive site to see, however you are not allowed to hike down it or round its rim. (You can take an hr long guided tour round the rim)
Thought the entrance price was very expensive for what it is particularly after seeing the impressive Grand Canyon.
Entrance price is $12 a person. There is a small museum too.
Do not go to the four corners from Phoenix. It is an extremely long drive and there is nothing there except for a small monument on the floor which is over crowded.
It costs $3 a person to get in and it was a complete waste of time driving all that extra distance!!!!
