Be very careful when driving in Phoenix and avoid the morning and evening rush hours if possible. Phoenix has an etremely well maintained and mordern road system, however, the the local population is usually driving in excess of the speed posted speed limits and violent crashs are not uncommon. drivers have little mercy on "snowbirds" (people who winter in Arizona) or other drivers from outside the area. If you are experienced at driving USA major cities you will find traffic in Phoenix better than most.
An added hazard driving in Phoenix is the large number of "illegal aliens" driving in the city, if you are in an accident with one of these drivers, you will have no financial or legal recourse to recover damages, since they are not in the country legally they are not subject to US civil law.
However, if you simply avoid the "rush hour" traffic times, you will find that in most cases you have many wide smooth lanes all to yourself while driving around the Phoenix metropolitan area!
Phoenix is laid out fairly easily if you know your address. Avenues, Lanes and Drives are west of Central Avenue (0) and Streets or Places are east of Central. You can have an address of 10010 W Bell and 10010 E Bell. They are about 25 miles apart, so you want be sure which is which.
You can also have the same address in some of the east valley cities, so double check your nearest cross streets.
Very high crime and car accident rate (among the highest in the country.) Hprrible temps in summer. I don't care how dry the heat is, when you get in the 110-120 range, it's too damn hot. The smog has gotten terrible in the last 10 years.
Maps in Phoenix are not very user friendly. I guess the place is growing so fast that map makers can't keep up. It was frustrating to try to follow the map but streets were not marked or just not on the map (even major streets.) Sometimes there were connecting streets that were simply not on the map. Once we went through a parking lot and found the street we needed. Difficult city to get around in but worth the struggle.
