www.dahl-diluca.com by madamx This place is a virtual oasis in Sedona, and it wins hands down as one of our favorite restaurants. The interior is done up gorgeously, and is the perfect romantic date spot, though we noticed all types eating the marvelous food here. Service was extremely professional and pleasant, even after we walked in with muddy jeans and fleece jackets after a day at the Grand Canyon. Make sure to ask for Reggie as your waiter -- his good humor and grace made our experience extremely pleasant.
My husband can't stop singing the praises of the garlic dip and bread, which is automatically brought to the table when you are seated. A type of bagna caulda, it is extra virgin olive oil, lots of finely chopped garlic, strips of basil, and a sprinkling of chile flakes and salt, and is heavenly on the warm, crusty, bread that they give you. We ate here twice, as we loved it so much, and you can't go wrong with either pasta or main entree dish. if you get a chance, order the Rib Eye steak, probably one of the best restaurant steaks I have ever had. Servings are extremely large, and include a house salad with generous shards of fresh parmigiano reggiano. If you do have room for dessert, go for the key lime pie, you won't be sorry. To add to the class of this place, they have a pianist or a violinist and guitarist duo playing most nights. Reservations are a must, as this restaurant is very popular. Leave a Comment

Let's carbo load!! by madamx The Canyon Cafe is a fancy name for the cafeteria located where we were staying at -- the Yavapai Lodge , Grand Canyon. The decor is standard cafeteria, and sort of reminded me of my high school days. However, the food here is suprising good, and all the service workers are pleasant and helpful if you are searching for something in a sea of glass display cases and people. Prices are quite reasonable as well, great for families or people watching their budget. An average dinner for two adds up to about $20.00 US.
Stick to the basic stuff for the best food. We really liked the hearty breakfasts, the hot beef sandwich, the chicken pot pie, and the fried chicken and fries. The pasta and sauce is not bad. There is a good salad bar (the only one on the South Rim) which is always fresh and topped up with a fair amount of choices. The downside was that they only had iceberg lettuce (I confess! I am a lettuce snob!), but the lettuce was always fresh, with shreds of red cabbage and carrot in it. Kids big and small will love the soft ice cream machine with about 1/2 a dozen different Dreyer's flavors. We also had raspberry cream cake as well, that was obviously not out of a package and was quite good. www.heartlinecafe.com by madamx The Heartline Cafe is touted as an innovative and creative restaurant, and I am sad to say we did not find it as such. As my husband said, "it just doesn't come all together", and I totally agree -- they seem to try very hard, but somehow, something is missing, and I still can't put my finger on it. We found the restaurant crowded and dark -- I almost needed a flashlight to see my food -- and extremely busy. From what I could see, the restaurant had pleasant decor. We noticed staff literally speedwalking from table to table. This made our experience a little less enjoyable; though service was very pleasant, and at a nice pace, and water glasses were filled appropriately, the whole atmosphere was not relaxing as it should be. Parking is also very awkward (Hello! welcome to Sedona!)
We were initially served a "vegetable spread" with our bread, which I guess is a healthy concept, and tasted okay, but it had a slimy and cold texture. We sent it back and asked for butter. Their famous smoked chicken dumpling with spicy peanut sauce was a great concept, but I thought that perhaps the dumpling should have been perhaps done up in tradtional steamed/fried asian style, as it was baked, sort of like a cornish pastie, and it was doughy. Our main dishes were cooked very well, and they sounded innovative, but they tasted just -- and I hate to say it -- ordinary. Perhaps we hit the restaurant on a bad day, but there was nothing here that would bring us back. Leave a Comment

www.desertmuseum.org by madamx The Ocotillo Cafe gives you a wonderful place to rest your feet and have a meal at the Sonoran Desert Museum. Of all the dining choices in the Museum, this is the most upscale and operates as a sit-down restaurant. On one side of the room, there is an interesting wall sculpture that really catches your eye, and the environment is cool and quiet, perfect for a break from walking in the sun. The food here is innovative and delicious, focusing on local and southwestern indgredients. Service here is excellent and moved at a good pace.
The menu has a good choice of light and heavier dishes, depending on what your appetite is like. After being out in the 92F heat most of the afternoon, I chose a large salad of mixed organic greens, grilled prawns, dried cranberries, toasted cinnamon pecans with blue cheese, and a lime-champagne vinagrette. It was a very delicous combination of textures and flavors, especially with the fresh bread that was brought to our table. My husband opted just for a dessert, and he raved about the slice of pecan tart he chose. From what we saw, everyone surrounding us enjoyed their meal. Reservations are recommended for dinner. by madamx This place was recommended to us by a local, as "the best ribs" so we thought we would give it a try. It is literally a hole in the wall, located in a hallway dividing two buildings and space is at premium. There is a counter that you order from, that is outdoors save for a small overhanging roof. A few tables are located in a tiny room across the hall (with glass walls and door, otherwise you would be too claustrophobic to eat). No wonder the local told us it would be best to have take-out. The woman serving us looked like she was used to scowling more than smiling, and verged on being rude. Maybe she was having a bad day, but it appeared that she probably has a lot of bad days, too.
Of course, we ordered the ribs, and you get two sides -- we chose coleslaw and fries. The ribs were okay, but we have had much better -- we found them not that tender, and the fries, though being very generous in portions, had been overcooked. The coleslaw was okay. If we had to eat here again for lack of anything else, we would, but I would not go out of my way to eat here again. by madamx Dedicated to anything cosmic, this diner's outerspace theme is quite amusing, and the kids will love it. The staff wear t-shirts saying "Welcome Earthlings" and the menu has items with names like: Lunar Linguine, Moon Loaf and Mothership Margarita. The food is simple diner food, and seems to be very busy with locals and tourists alike. The whole restaurant is decorated with a space-theme in mind, and you will find pictures of UFO's under glass on the counter, plus other recognizable space characters, such as a ceramic Mr. Spock face hung on one wall.
We ate here a couple of times, and found the service ranged from good to indifferent. Stick to the simple diner items such as burgers, wings, shakes and fries. I did try the Moon (meat) Loaf, but found it salty and greasy, as it appeared to have been previously made, then sliced and fried on a grill -- an explanation of a brown crust on the underside of each slice. It is, though, worth it just to come once, to take in the cosmic atmosphere. WARNING The restaurant seems to be affiliated with a timeshare company. If a super friendly guy starts talking to you, especially about your plans in the area, or if you are given a gift certificate for a free picture of yourselves to be put on their restaurant newspaper, run fast and far, it's a ploy to sell you a timeshare for the Los Abrigados Resort. Of course, if you want that sort of thing, enjoy! However, we found it a bit wearing as timeshare salesmen seem to have taken over Sedona. by madamx This is just the place to drop in for a midday treat. They also serve breakfast and lunch. You order at the counter, then have a seat and the food is brought to you. The day we were there, there was an amazing array of treats -- various cheesecakes, 1 1/2" thick lemon squares, lemon tarts, mouth-watering strawberry tarts, huge slabs of brownies, AND a berry mousse cake stuffed with white chocolate and chunks of cheesecake. Yikes! it was a sugar fanatic's dream come true! Service was a bit indifferent, and perhaps because it was late afternoon, they wanted to get home.
Since I was getting peckish, I ordered a tuna melt sandwich; it was a bit greasy as they made it like a grilled cheese sandwich, with greens inside. The greens cooked inside the sandwich, making it a little unappetizing, but the sandwich tasted ok. My husband had a personal sausage pizza, which he rated passable. The real focus here is the desserts. We sampled a strawberry tart, lemon tart and brownie, and all were very good, the favorite being the brownie. Make sure to concentrate only on the baked goods here, and you should come out on a sugar high. Yum. by madamx Tired after a long day at the Sonoran Desert Museum, we weren't in the mood for experimenting with new places, and dropped by this restaurant which is in a mall that includes a Barnes and Noble and a Pier One Imports. A cop-out, I know, but I think the desert sun and 90 F temperatures evaporated any adventurous energy we had left in us. From what I understand, the restaurant is part of a chain, and it was suprisingly very good. It is decorated very pleasantly in Tuscan style and our waiter was friendly (everyone is so friendly in Arizona!) and gave us quick, professional service.
We both had pasta dishes, and the servings were good, and not over the top, which we find in a lot of US restaurants. The pasta was done perfectly al dente, and our dishes were really very tasty. Your meal comes with focaccia bread and olive oil for dipping, without the balsamic vinegar (which I don't care for with bread anyway) For dessert we recommend highly the chocolate cake with hot fudge (ask for the fudge on the side so you don't get overwhelmed) Desserts are very large, so you may want to share if you just want something small. Have a Wa:k snack by madamx The Wa:k Snack Shop is located within walking distance of Mission San Xavier Del Bac, and is run by the local natives on the San Xavier Reservation. They serve burgers, fries, and drinks, but the main item here is the Indian Fry Bread, which is basically deep-fried dough. You step up to a counter to order your food, and you can take out, or eat on the shaded concrete tables in front of the tiny building that houses the counter and kitchen. This is Slow Food. Very slow food. Each order is made fresh, and line-ups can be huge. We waited an hour for our order.
We had a Foldover, which is Indian Fry Bread, cooked in a pizza-shape, then we had it filled with refried beans and cheese, and it is folded over into a half-moon shape. It was huge, and two people can share it comfortably. It was delicious, though fairly bland, but lots of hot sauce fixed that up. The food here is good, but be prepared to wait a long time for it. Not a place to eat at if you are on a schedule. by madamx The Mexican food in this restaurant is done in the style of Mexico City, as opposed to the Sonoran style common in the US. The restaurant is part of a chain that is popular in Mexico City. The restaurant has it's own security guard for the parking lot -- a good thing, I know, but it kind of threw us off, as we thought he was someone who was looking to break into cars! The dining area itself is a cheerful, busy place, full of families having a night out, and we noticed it was mostly Hispanic clientele (another good thing). We wanted authentic Mexican food, which is pretty rare to find in Canada.
Our waitress was very friendly (what we noticed consistently in Arizona) and very helpful with the menu. We were not too hungry, and decided to share a grilled meat dish, the name I only remember being something elaborate in Spanish. There is plenty of fresh chips, salsa and guacomole provided as well, at each table. It was lucky that we shared, as what we find in most US restaurants, portions were very large. Charcoal-broiled beef and sausage came in it's own little heater (see the pic) and was accompanied by fresh tortillas, grilled scallions, and melted cheese. It also came with a bowl of "charro beans", which tasted okay, but were in a watery broth, and to top it off, it also was accompanied by cheese quesidillas! It was all very yummy and even more so as we washed it down with a couple of margaritas, of course! Prices were very reasonable, and the dish we shared cost about $10.00 US Leave a Comment
