www.grandcanyonlodges.com by madamx Our main reason for stopping here was to have the famous Canyon Crunch ice cream, since the the Bright Angel Fountain only takes cash, and we we only had a credit card on us. The room was nice enough, done up in a western theme, but service, though pleasant, crawled at a snail's pace.
We decided we might as well have lunch, and I had the Hiker's Salad, which was grilled chicken breast, salad, and romano cheese. The salad was iceberg lettuce ( I know, I'm a lettuce snob) which was described on the menu as "mixed greens", the chicken breast was okay, but the worst thing about the salad was the pre-grated-in-a-canister Romano cheese. Ick. The saving grace of the salad was the delightfully sweet and spicy Grape-Serrano salad dressing, sort of like a vinagrette. My husband had a cheese burger and onion rings, and he thought the burger was pretty good, and the onion rings outstanding. The Canyon Crunch ice cream is very yummy. It appears to be vanilla ice cream with chocolate and butterfinger pieces. However, the waiter told us that it is no longer being made, as the Grand Canyon is the only purchaser, so it may soon be no longer available. I thought the food was okay, but I expected the quality to be better as it was a sit-down restaurant -- it seemed to be about the same as at the Yavapai cafeteria. You would be probably better off at the cafeteria, as the prices are cheaper. Hominy Stew with Lamb by madamx The Hopi Cultural Centre is located on Second Mesa, and it is a museum, motel and restaurant rolled into one. If you are travelling on the Hopi Reservation, this will probably be a stop for you, as the museum is worth taking in as well as you may want to shop for crafts. Service was friendly and fairly quick, and prices were suprisingly reasonable. The interior of the restaurant is bright and pleasant, and it appears many locals eat here as well. The have an excellent salad bar, and serve a wide range of American as well as traditional native dishes.
We were visiting the Hopi Reservation, so I wanted to get the full experience by trying the traditional Hominy and Lamb Stew with Green Chili. It tasted ok, but was fairly bland save for a fair amount of salt. The roasted green chili added some spice, and to be totally honest, the best part of it was the accompanying fry bread. I probably would not eat it again, having tried it once. Our travelling companions had the salad bar and the ham chowder that they had with it was excellent. My husband said his Philly Cheesteak sandwich was quite good. You may want to try the Indian Taco -- flat, pizza-shaped fry bread with beans, chili, beef and cheese. the cheesey sauce made it worth the stop by richiecdisc We had to drive a wee bit off the main highway to go to Oak Creek Brewing but it was right in Sedona which had to be a beautiful place to attract all of those beautiful people to it, right? Well, it was a stunning sight despite all the traffic. We hadn't seen this many people since we left Florida three weeks earlier. It was like someone had turned on the people faucet and cars were pouring out of it. Parking was crazy and expensive so was happy to find the brewpub in a cute little village type strip mall. It wasn't easy to find a spot there but at least it was free once I did! The pub itself was a bit upscale but once seated at the bar it felt like an outdoorsy tourist town bar and the bartender was amicable and helpful with local tips. I suddenly could see myself paying $5 to park, hiking all day, hitting the sauna, and eating a nice big meal in here, washing the whole day down with quite a few of the Oak Creek brews.
The menu was inviting but pricey so we stuck with the beer though the Hefeweizen I'd come to sample was not on tap that day in favor of a seasonal Saison. This Belgian style unfiltered amber beer had a rocky head and apricot nose. The citrusy palate and coriander finish was perfect for the hot dry climate of Sedona. A few sips and we were ordering the Brewmaster's Pretzels, two nice warm soft pretzels served with a tasty hot cheesy sauce. So much for the budget, we wound up spending $38 between the brewpub and the latter in the day visit to the actual brewery. Leave a Comment

When I lived in Sierra Vista, this was the place to eat if you wanted a special meal. The Mesquite Tree is noted for it's tasty variety of meat, seafood, and pasta, all with lots of flavorful spice. If it's nice out, request to sit on the patio. Leave a Comment

the elusive hefeweizen by richiecdisc While talking to the bartender at the Oak Creek Brewery & Grill, he told us about the actual brewery just up the road that would have the Hefeweizen on tap if we wanted to try it. The only catch was it didn't open until 4 that afternoon and it was only about 2:30. After searching the supermarkets in vain for the elusive weissbier, we went to the brewery. It was a real local's place with a cool little beer garden that had great red rock views.
We had the Hefeweizen which was a bit low on carbonation for the style but otherwise a perfect honey comb hued unfiltered Bavarian style wheat beer with nice banana clove palate and yeasty overtones. The Marzen was an amber and all too sweet interpretation of the style. It was a great little place but one I should have given a pass on considering we were not going to stay in town and still have quite a bit of driving to do that day. You like Italian? How bout Chinese? Vietnamese? American? They have it here. Noodle dishes from all over the world, and cooked perfectly! They even have wines to go with each dish. Angie had German and Chinese; I had American and Italian and we shared a little bite of each. Amazing place.
Wow. the Italian manicoti, the Chinese Lo Mein with shrimp and vegetables, the Thai noodles with peanut sauce, the American egg noodle casserole.....I can't make up my mind! Leave a Comment

Real American Cowboy by pabertra After working up an appetite from hot air ballooning my mom offered to take the crew out for breakfast. We drove to some small restaurant and bar that was in the middle of nowhere in the desert. After ordering a hearty and inexpensive breakfast we peered in on the locals, which happened to include some real American cowboys. When you go to these out of the way places you can encounter the true spirit of the Southwest. Check out the cowboy in the photo. Another surprise? The men's room was reputed to have an old trough serving as the urinal. Quite interesting! Leave a Comment

lovely Oak Creek Brewery & Grill by richiecdisc On a solo trip in 1995 I was looking to move perhaps to Phoenix. Of course, I had to scope out the local breweries and this one was a nice old time style bar located in a strip mall on the outskirts of town. The brewpub business is highly competitive and not all of them last. This one evidently bit the dust between my visit and now but keep this tip as a memory of the beer I had on that occasion in another time. Luckily, there are much better places now such as Nimbus in Tuscon and Oak Creek in Sedona.
The food was typical pub grub but as I hazily remember their Toby Stout wasn't half bad. The photo is of Oak Creek Brewing in Sedona. Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryAddress: 4883 North 20th St. Phoenix, AZOther Contact: Corner of 20th and Camelback, ne

Sign inside the Canyon Star. by SabrinaSummerville The Canyon Star is a Hotel located, as the name suggests, at the Grand Canyon. Our tour stopped here for lunch and there was a pretty good selection of hot and cold food to choose from the buffet there. All food was buffet service. There was a soup, which I didn't try. Then there were dishes such as breaded pork, fried fish in batter, rice and pasta dishes, and all sorts of salads. After the morning touring the Canyon I was especially grateful for the cold drinks on tap as you could help yourself to as much as you felt you needed, and I needed a lot:-) There was a selection of desserts, teas and coffees. Alcohol was not included in the lunch but could be purchased seperately. Leave a Comment Theme: AmericanDirections: Grand Canyon, Arizona.
