  • Javelina Rocks Picnic Area

    Another stop along the Cactus Forest Loop is the Javelina Rocks Picnic Area. This area is called Javelina Rocks because it is frequently visited by Javelinas. The formation is made of Catalina Gneiss, a form of granite.

  • Six Life Zones

    Here you are at the bottom level of six life zones. This is the Desert Floor. Ahead you can see one of the foothills of the Rincon Mountains. There are six different life zones between the desert floor and the pine forests at the top of the Rincons.

  • Cactus Forrest Drive

    The main part of the Saguaro National Park East Unit is probably Cactus Forrest Drive. There are 7 overlooks where you can pull off and take pictures and access points for 3 trailheads. Most of the drive is one way. The Desert Ecology Nature Trail and the Freeman Homestead Nature Trail are wheelchair accessible.

    The Mica View Trail starts at the Mica View Picnic Area and is one mile each way in length. It only rises and falls about 80 feet in elevation so it is not that difficult. It offers nice views of the Mica Mountains and the different types of cacti in this park. Good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
