Sedona – Tlaquepaque: arts and crafts village

by vtveen

‘Of course’ we visited Sedona’s shopping landmark ‘Tlaquepaque’ (pronounced Tla-keh-pah-keh) not far away from Uptown Sedona. (We walked to the shopping center – avoiding parking problems and returned by a free shuttle bus).Tlaquepaque is built in Mexican style with shaded courtyards, fountains, tiles staircases, flowers, trees and cobble stoned plazas. And the most important it offers about 40 shops, restaurants and one café. As a matter of fact most of the ‘shops’ are art galleries; others are really upscale shops selling jewellery, crafts and wearable’s. Don’t expect cheap knickknacks in Tlaquepaque and don’t forget your credit card.To be honest we loved it strolling around and having a drink watching the visitors, but didn’t buy anything (not really our taste and most of the stuff was just too expensive).Opening hours of the shops: 10 am -5 pm; closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas...

Navajo vendors: crafts from Navajo Nation

by vtveen

It isn’t a shopping mall, it isn't a shop, it isn’t even a booth, no there are just some tables in the open air along the Chinle Wash in the shadow of some trees just beneath the White House Ruin, were local Navajo craftsmen try to sell their craft. Most of it - at least during our visit - was jewellery. They told us it was made of silver, but with these very cheap prices, I really doubt if it is the truth. My wife bought a Navajo bracelet for just USD 5,- and when it didn’t fit too well a friendly Navajo woman changed it on the spot. On other places along the South Rim Drive Navajo were also selling pottery, carvings, rock art and music. From USD 5,-

which one .... ????
Scottsdale Fashion Square: huge mall, not only with fashion shops

by vtveen

On our way north to Holbrook) we made a stop at the Scottsdale Fashion Square, more or less expecting a lot (or only) fashion shops. But we were rather surprised by the variety of shops (some with elite brands), department stores, and restaurants in this huge mall. Did read there should be about 225 shops and is the largest shopping mall of Arizona !! Amazing to see there were even constructions to add more shops to the Fashion Square. We even didn’t have time enough to stroll along all the shops on the three floors. Just time to see some of them and to buy a couple of clothes (they were so cheap for us) and some food for our lunch. Shopping is not our favourite holiday occupation, but this visit was worth the time and money. Openinghours: Mon-Sat: 10am-9pm / Sun 11am-6pm

The prices are dirt cheap, the selection fairly good and profits help the local library. They have differnt rooms for different types of books. The Quatro Casitas is four homes/shops (not including the outhouse) housing a group of local artisans. The main shop is the Soap Fetsih, which sells candles, soaps, butters, dashikis and various items from around the world with an emphasis on Africa. A unique shop that you would not expect to see in the middle of the desert. Stop and shop.

St David also has an upscale art gallery. The Gallery of Dreams is a family run concern which has a variety of art works for sale. They take consignments and have a number of rather impressive bronze works by the owner, Tim Trask. Be aware, however, most items in the gallery are not cheap. One of the bronze statues was $9500.00.
