Tempe Things to Do

  • Hayden Butte

Hayden Butte (also called Tempe Butte) is very easy to find. It over looks Mill Avenue are and Arizona State and has a huge "A" on the side. There is an easy but steep paved path that leads up to a stair case to the summit. The summit is not much to speak of. You are better off seeing the view of Tempe a little lower on the path. The top is not...

  • Mill Avenue District

There is a section of Mill Avenue, near Arizona State University, that has a some unique shops, restaurants and bars. It is a very happening place. The area is popular with tourist as well as locals and students from ASU. If you are in Tempe, it is a definite must see place for food and happy hour.

  • Paddle a Boat at Kiwanis Lake!

It was Easter Sunday afternoon and I just got off work (yes I had to work that day!), so I decided to bring the family to Tempe and I was surprised to find the Kiwanis Community Park Lake! It was awesome - families were everywhere and they were all having fun, a lot of them with their personal boom boxes - music everywhere. My son ran towards the...

  • See the Tempe City Hall

The Tempe City Hall is one of the most architecturally unique I have ever seen. I am afraid if I had a corner office here I would be afraid of falling out through the window. The sculpture out front is made from a remnant of the historic Ash Street Bridge.

  • Tempe Beach Park

We were driving around Tempe on a very hot 108 degree Sunday afternoon, and then we saw some activity by the road. It looked like people having fun with spraying water - we had to check it out!It was the Tempe Beach Park and it had a Splash Playground. We parked on one of the two big parking lots and as you can see in the picture, the twins ran...

  • Tempe Beach Park

When the sun goes down, or even before, Tempe-ans head to this park. You can stroll, lay on the grass, picnic under the moon, rent a paddleboat or a small runabout, go on a little river cruise or even jog! Watch for the light effects on the bridge that the Metro runs on as everytime the tram goes over the bridge, the lights change! Pretty!

  • Tempe Center for the Arts

When in Tempe, you have to check out this wonderful piece of architecture right beside the Tempe Lake! I went on the ledges of the fountains and attempted to get a jumping picture as I had my "10 second timer" on the digital camera on - and after about three attempts, I realized the people in the lounge were laughing at my antics through the glass...

So, here I am lounging on a Scottsdale hotel patio right now May 17, 2009- but I plan to take the kids to Tempe Town Lake today so I can have more current pics of this great place.Tempe has done a great job in transforming this place from the dry riverbed of Rio Salado (dried due to the upstream diversions) to a vibrant lake with a marina, boat...

Tempe Restaurants

  • Fresh lunch and great pastries

Ncounter prides itself on fresh made food daily. Its a corner restaurant with large windows that give a very open atmosphere. They also have outdoor seating. There is a small counter with a menu above. The writing is small but they have paper menus to use if you can't read the small print. After ordering they give you a small metal stand with a...

  • Falls short on flavor

This is a nice bar restaurant just off of Mill Avenue. They have outdoor seating as well. The wait staff were very helpful and attentive. One thing caught my eye on the menu and ordered that. It was the Chorizo stuffed Pork Tenderloin which is described as Chorizo, Jack cheese and poblano peppers stuffed into pork tenderloin, atop a bed of sweet...

$15 as of January 2013. I wanted to try something different from the Indian Vegetarian restaurant acroos from the hotel so I went walked down Scottsdale Road a few blocks and spotted a place called the Villa Peru. Villa Peru is located in a stripmall and looked okay; but not great from the outside. Once I walked in I felt better as the decor was...

  • It's a Chain But Good

Z'Tejas is a small chain of restaurants that started in Austin, Texas. It is what I would call "California Mexican" food. Actually the number of entrees is not that big but they are good, as is the service. There is outdoor dining (with misters when it is hot) and a large bar area. There were many ASU students eating and drinking at Z'Tejas. The...

  • You Cannot Stay Skinny There

The My Big Fat Greek Restaurant in Tempe is part of a small five-restaurant, Phoenix area chain. I have eaten there twice. Both times the food was excellent but the second time the service was slow in starting. It seemed to be a long time before anyone noticed we had been seated. However, once they found us, the service was good and the staff...

  • Great Thai restaurant in Tempe, Arizona

This is not a super fancy place, but considering the reasonable cost, friendly and efficient service, great food and low key ambiance I have to give this place 5 stars. The lady serving us told me that this restaurant had been around for 25 years - so it seems to have done well in a very competitive market. Strange that this was my first time...

  • Organic Lunch

It's really easy to miss this place, it's in a couryard off of Mill and it's only open from 10-3 on weekdays. But its worth making your way over to. It's a tiny place but they offer some really good, healthy, fresh, organic food.

  • Mill Avenue Night Spots

With a large university right next door, Tempe has more than its share of night spots. I did not check them out but these are supposed to be good ones. If a student tells you they are going to the library, it may not be what you think. There are innovative panhandlers too. One guy wanted money for "ethanol research."

I dig this place... the bar was acctually imported piece by piece from Ireland. Its authentic, but a little bit high end as far as Irish Pubs go, so it fits right into the trendy Mill avenue thing... lots of college kids there... Not suprising, as its less than a mile from Arizona State University... If you've never been to Mill avenue, Tempe, its...

  • They stole it

This place definitely stole their concept from Coyote Ugly. Bartendars dancing bar tops, customers too, but different because it had books and sofas. There was definitely a lot of people there the night that I went. Don't know if it is too good when school is out. Definitely a college hangout. The place is alright if you're into the college crowd...

  • Let's Go Clubbing

If you want a great club to dance the night away the best one to go to is Margarita Rocks. The best nights to go are Fridays and Saturdays of course. This place is right near the ASU campus so if school is in session expect an even bigger crowd. Anything goes as long as it doesn't count as nudity.

Tempe Transportation

  • METRO Light Rail

A new light rail system will open in 2008 for Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. It crosses Tempe at the north end of the Mill Avenue district. There will be a station at 3rd and Mill. It was already only 8-10 minutes to the Phoenix International Airport from downtown Tempe, but soon you can take the light rail and not even have to park your car.

Tempe Off The Beaten Path

  • by PandaBear77 Written May 4, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If your in Tempe your obviously going to be walking down Mill and so lucky for you this hidden gem is really close by. Go East on University and make a left on Ash, which is just one block down from Mill. This neighborhood is so beautiful with small homes with so much character. These homes not only have grass in their yards instead of rocks (haha) but also have much more wonderful landscaping, youll forget your in Phoenix/Tempe. The homes are all different colors, shapes and the owners display their own art out front. Please dont drive through this neighborhood, take a casual stroll.
