Favorite thing: We did not travel Rt. 66 because we came up from Phoenix. But, if you are coming to the Grand Canyon from Southern California or Las Vegas, one of the longest stretches of Rt. 66 is on your way to Williams. There are lots of interesting stops along the way including Grand Canyon Caverns.
Williams is the Townwhere you either turn north to the south rim of the grand canyon or turn south to Pheonix as it lies equidistant of the two areas. It is the favorite stopover for lunch (usually buffet lunch for the packaged tours) for tourists and gamblers coming from las vegas doing the South Rim of the Grand Canyon Tour.
I had this grand canyon tour initally by land. It is a 5 hour drive from las vegas throught the hoover dam, mojave desert with stop overs at kingman and williams, arizona and finally to the grand canyon.
Favorite thing: Visit the Route 66 gift shop. I bought some t shirts, mugs etc. as gifts and I recieved a free Route 66 2002 Calender. How great is that.
