The Cantina is right next door to the Red Garter Bed & Bakery. It is a fun place with lots of activity even mid-week in September! There is casual food with various beers and drinks, and you can eat in or out on the patio. We had taco salad and chicken quesadillas.

    Rods Steak House. We chose...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rods Steak House. We chose this place to eat because our son is called Rod and we thought that it may be a good omen. It was! Great food, friendly helpful waitress, that's all I want!
The ladys toilet!! I'd say that the opaque glass half doors are pretty unique!!

Chicken or fish for me. Steve and Rod both had the sirloin steaks and said they were good. Steve also tried the trout one night and that was lovely.

    Old Smoky's: Best breakfast
  • Satisfaction:
  • Breakfast on the road that is special? Yes, Old Smoky's - breakfast & lunch only. Glad I heard recommendation as outward appreaance wouldn't mean anything special. While in there you will see the loyal local following. Kitsch, yes; no big deal. In a town of other mostly haphazard food, it's nice the owner is dedicated to quality common food done uncommonly well. And give them a chance & you'll be chatting with very friendly staff.

How about ordnary old hash browns as an example? As a veteran of uncounted bad hash browns, one will nearly rave. They use freshly cut real potatoes, not from a frozen bag from any old commercial supplier. They proceed to cook with butter based cooking oil, not the cheapest any old thing. Then they watch them well & do not mindlessly squash them down with a spatula to hasten cooking. The result is hash browns you wish your mother used to make.

  • Address: corner of old Route 66
  • Directions: In the center of town, the main drag is split - west bound to the north & est bound a block south. Old Smoky's is a few blocks west of center. Especially east bound you'll notice it on the corner.

Pancho McGillicuddy's: East meets West with a touch of Navajo
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a brilliant characterful restaurant - an Irish-themed Mexican with some Navajo influences!! Food offerings include snack items such as nachos and wings, the usual range of tacos, enchiladas and burritos, a small section of house specialities (Sonoran Diablo Steak for instance) and a few plainer items, "Para Los Gringos".

I just knew I was going to enjoy this when given the option of smoking or non!!

This was a seriously busy little place but the service was by and large good (we did have to chase up our second round of drinks), friendly and informal and the food portions enormous.

The bar stocks all the usual bits including a range of 30 tequilas (Margaritas can be made from any) and a huge range of draft and bottled beers including the wonderfully flavoured Negro Modelo and for the Irish theme features Draft Guinness and Killan's Red.

Between us we opted for the Navajo Tacos with chicken, McGillicuddy Platter and a side order of wings (buzzard wings as described on the menu!). The Navajo Tacos consisted of a huge round of "fry bread" which I would describe as like a deep-fried pizza base, fried from the fresh dough, and topped with pretty much everything imaginable in the Mexican repertoire. The McGilliccudy Platter was a pair each of chicken tacos and chilli relenos, once again with all the toppings. Wings were good too, decent spice. Add to this the tortilla chips and salsa with our drinks, the portions were such that even despite the fact we were both fairly hungry we had at least half of it boxed for takeaway.

With two rounds of drinks - a couple of pints of excellent local microbrews and 2 classic margaritas the $50 bill was more than reasonable.

Pancho McGillicuddy's Mexican Restaurant: Great Mexican Food!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The decor in this restaurant can only be described as eclectic, but in a good way. The food is fabulous, and the service when we were there was great. They have an outdoor patio, and on the evening we were there they had live entertainment on the patio, which contributed to our enjoyment.

We took 3 teenagers to this restaurant, and nobody had any complaints about their meals. This is almost too good to be true!
