by spartan One of the Marine Corps' premier aviation training bases, with access to 2.8 million acres of bombing and aviation training ranges, and superb flying weather, MCAS Yuma supports 80 percent of the Corps' air-to-ground aviation training. Each year, the air station hosts numerous units and aircraft from U.S. and NATO forces.
The ideal weather and location along the Colorado River, make Yuma and the surrounding area an oasis in the southwestern Sonoran Desert with a bounty of superb recreational opportunities and water sports. Seasonal hunting and fishing abound in the fish and game rich Yuma area. Nestled in five square miles just southeast of Yuma, the air station is home to a number of tenant units including Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron-1, Marine Aircraft Group-13, Marine Wing Support Squadron-371, Marine Fighter Training Squadron-401, Marine Air Control Squadron-1 and Combat Service Support Detachment-16 (Courtesy of the USMC). Go & get tacos from a van parked on the side of the road on Sth Avenue B somewhere between 24th St & 32nd st, they are cheap & very tasty feed! I am not sure what time he starts up in the evening but safe to say someone local would be able to tell you!
Actually I was secretly impressed by the lettuce growing in so many places around the fringes of town, I am sure there were other things too, but lettuce, cheap & fresh & perfect is very impressive to a Darwinite! (I know that's so weird, but I often have to refuse to pay almost $4 for not very good leaf produce... it has to come thousand's of kilometres to get to Darwin)as this kind of thing runs to seed almost immediately in the tropics. My favorite thing about Yuma was how I arrived and how I left. The name had always intrigued me so I made it a point to go. Rolled into down on the old Southern Pacific line aboard the Sunset Limited. Leave a Comment

The sanddunes, the prison, my house for a BBQ, a tour of the KTTI station.
The weather during the winter, doing charitable events to help children, and serving the community. And of course, all the golf one can get in one day. Leave a Comment

Yuma has a small Visitor Center located at the corner of Giss Pkwy and Maiden Lane at downtown. Besides providing good maps and tourist info, they also have lots of info about RV parks and senior housing. You can tell many of their services are designed for retired people. I didn't take a photo here. Leave a Comment

Paradise Casino by mht_in_la A short drive across the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway Bridge and visit the Paradise Casino. It's inside the Quechan reservation on the California side. Paradise is one of the most successful Indian casinos I've seen. Besides the normal slot machines, they also have a wide array of table games including poker (even in Vegas, not all casino have poker tables). And when I was there, they managed to bring in 2nd tier Vegas performers "Thunder from Down Under" to entertain all the grandmas in Yuma. I also noticed many of the residents in the reservation drive luxury cars. The casino must be doing well. Leave a Comment
