The Yuma Territorial Prison started when seven inmates were sent to the prison in July 1876. They were housed in cells they built thenselves. In the 33 years the prison operated 3069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within the walls of the prison. The park is open from 8 AM to 5 PM daily except it closes at 2PM on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve. It is closed on Christmas Day. Entrance is $4 for 14 and up and free for 13 and below. Facilities include a visitor's center, a museum, a gift shop, a video room, picnic area and restrooms. They have a number of special events listed on the website.

Your first stop at the park should be the visitor's center where you can get informational brochures, but souvenirs, and pay the entrance fee.

One of the first thimgs you will notice as you approach the Yuma Territorial Prison Historic State Park is the guardtower. The guardtower was built on top of the water storage tank on a platform placed there to reduce evaporation. After the prison was closed the guardtower served several other purposes including a civil defense lookout tower during World War 2, until the state park was established.

You just have to go to the old prison if you are in Yuma. It is the area's main attraction. The prison was built in 1876 and was made famous in western novels and cowboy movies. In the years after the prison was closed it was used as a location for filming movies about the French Foreign Legion. If you have seen any of those old black and white movies you have already seen Yuma Prison and did not know it.
You can see what is left of the old buildings. Many of them were made of stone and have held up well. There is a museum there about the prison and a nature trail also.

Yuma Territorial Prison State Park - Between 1876 and 1909, this penitentiary housed many of Arizona's most dangerous and notorious criminals. Famed in movies, literature and television, the remains of the prison are now Arizona's most visited State Historic Park. The cells, main gate and guard tower have endured as grim reminders of frontier justice. Museum exhibits document the story of the prison.

For particularly unruly prisoners the prison built a few "dark cells" as punishment for the prisoner. As you can see from the photo the cell is appropriately named.

Here you see the entrance to the cell area and some of the cells from the prison. These were all built by the prisoners that would later occupy them. The original prison got too crowded so a row of new cells was added.
