by spartan There are a number of ways to get to Yuma. You can fly into Yuma International Airport (which is served by both America West Airlines out of Phoenix and United Airlines out of LAX). You can drive to Yuma along I-8 which stretches from San Diego to I-10 South of Phoenix. Many people spend the winter months here because of the warm weather and drive down in their RV's. MAP OF MY ITINERARY - ENLARGE! by matcrazy1 Yuma is located on Interstate 8, making its accessibility from California or points East expedient and convenient. I arrived to Yuma from Tijuana, Mexico via San Diego - driving just I-8 (Interstate 8 freeway). Then I drove I-8 to I-10 to Saguro National Park and Tucson, Arizona, then I-19 to Nogales on Mexican border. OLD TRANSPORTATION (FOR PRISONERS) by matcrazy1 You can see this old transportation mean as on my picture in Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park. It seems that it was used to tranport prisoners outside the prison (to/from other prisons). Hmm... not very comfortable in hot weather especially, no air-condition :-). Leave a Comment Theme: Other

DRIVER'S SEAT IN VEHICLE OF YUMA PRISON by matcrazy1 Whenever you drive to/around Yuma buckle up (= fasten your safety belts) - it's a state law! Hmm... what to do when you drive a vehicle as on my picture? Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

OLD TRANSPORTATION :-) by matcrazy1 You can see this old transpartation mean inside the museum of Yuma Territorial Prison. Who did pull it? Prisoners or animals, which animals? Horses or... cows (males or females)? Rather not camels, I suppose :-). Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Desert Heat by atv4life While planning your trip to Yuma, always keep in mind that you may survive 40 days without food, but here in Yuma, you will not survive without WATER. During the Springtime, and Summer months, temps can rise from 65 degrees in the morning to well over 100 degrees in the late afternoon. It is essential that you carry pleanty of water with you when traveling in and around Yuma. No one ever intends on having an accident, thus the reason they are called accidents, but you don't ever want to get caught without water. Please carry enough water for your vehicle and for drinking purposes to accomodate those that are with you. I always carry enough water to take care of my personal needs and the needs of some that may not know to carry water with them. Leave a Comment

Visitor's Center by Basaic The Yuma Territorial Prison started when seven inmates were sent to the prison in July 1876. They were housed in cells they built thenselves. In the 33 years the prison operated 3069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within the walls of the prison. The park is open from 8 AM to 5 PM daily except it closes at 2PM on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve. It is closed on Christmas Day. Entrance is $4 for 14 and up and free for 13 and below. Facilities include a visitor's center, a museum, a gift shop, a video room, picnic area and restrooms. They have a number of special events listed on the website. Your first stop at the park should be the visitor's center where you can get informational brochures, but souvenirs, and pay the entrance fee.

There is a museum on the grounds that discusses the construction of the jail, the inmates, the jailers, the townspeople and the Native Americans in the area.

One of the first thimgs you will notice as you approach the Yuma Territorial Prison Historic State Park is the guardtower. The guardtower was built on top of the water storage tank on a platform placed there to reduce evaporation. After the prison was closed the guardtower served several other purposes including a civil defense lookout tower during World War 2, until the state park was established.
